Kernel of differentiation and integration

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of the kernel in the context of differentiation and integration operators, specifically addressing two questions: the kernel of the integration operator defined by the derivative of a polynomial and the kernel of the differentiation operator defined by the definite integral of a polynomial over a specified interval.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks about the kernel of the integration operator defined as T(p) = p'(x).
  • The same participant inquires about the kernel of the differentiation operator defined as T(p) = integration of p(x) from -1 to 1.
  • Another participant suggests that the original poster may not have sufficient understanding of calculus to tackle these problems, questioning their familiarity with differentiation and integration.
  • A different participant expresses uncertainty about whether a previous comment was a typo.
  • One participant indicates they may have figured out the answer independently.
  • Another participant expresses frustration at being questioned instead of receiving help.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion features multiple competing views, with some participants questioning the original poster's readiness to engage with the problems while others focus on the specific questions about the kernels.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of clarity regarding the definition of "kernel" as it pertains to the operators mentioned, and the discussion does not resolve the mathematical implications of the terms used.

hi,
i got a algebra question regarding kernel

1.what is the kernel of intergration operator:
T(p)= p'(x)?

2. what is the kernel of differentiation operator :

T(p) = integration of p(x) from -1 to 1

thanks

Sounds like homework.

Have you done anything at all on these problems?

You shouldn't even be attempting problems like these if you know nothing whatever about calculus- like which of these problems involves differentiation and which integration.

What is the definition of "kernel"?

I assume (hope?) that was just a typo. :-p

nevermind - i think i konw the answer

i asking a question but u ask me back ?!
