Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of specific gravity, particularly its definition and implications in calculations. The original poster seeks clarification on what a specific gravity value of 780 indicates and whether any additional factors should be considered in calculations.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the definition of specific gravity and its calculation in relation to the density of water. Questions arise about the importance of reference conditions, such as temperature.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided definitions and considerations regarding specific gravity, including the need to specify reference conditions. However, there is no explicit consensus on the implications of the specific gravity value mentioned by the original poster.

Contextual Notes

There is a mention of the need to consider reference temperature when discussing specific gravity, indicating that assumptions about conditions may be relevant to the calculations.

Does anyone know what specific gravity is? If something has a weight of specific gravity of 780, what does that mean, do I need to take something into account before calculating?

Thank you - Arden

Specific gravity is the density of a substance divided by the density of water.

It is appropriate to always specify the reference temperature of the water (or air for gases).
