Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the mechanisms and technologies that enable Google's search engine to perform rapid searches across the internet. Participants explore various aspects of Google's infrastructure, including its hardware, indexing methods, and the algorithms used in search queries.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes the significant difference in search speeds between personal computers and Google's search engine, questioning the underlying technology.
  • Another participant suggests that Google's processing power is substantial, implying that it may not search the entire internet but rather narrows results based on keywords.
  • Some participants mention that Google utilizes "spider" bots to crawl and index portions of the internet, which aids in the search process.
  • A participant references Google's use of a large Linux cluster based on commodity hardware as part of its infrastructure.
  • Links to external resources are provided, including articles and a thesis related to Google's technology.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express varying views on how Google conducts its searches, with some agreeing on the use of indexing and crawling methods while others speculate on the extent of Google's search capabilities. The discussion does not reach a consensus on the specifics of Google's search technology.

Contextual Notes

Some claims rely on assumptions about Google's operational methods, and there are references to external sources that may not be universally accepted or verified within the discussion.

The search feature on my computer can take up to a minute and google can search the entire internet in a fraction of a second. How does it do that?

Even with everything archived, it seems like the processing power needed to run such a search engine would be astronomical.

Google has a really large linux cluster based on commodity hardware.

Simple Answer :: Google Owns.

But if I were to take a guess, I would say that google does not search the entire internet. But narrows down the search via your keywords. I am not exatly sure of that, however.

Yes, Google uses "spider" bots to "crawl" portions of the Internet to index sites, along with their keywords.

The Founder's Ph.d. Thesis is out there. it discuses the tech he ended up using in building google. I forget the name of the paper. some one used it as a presentation topic in my seminar class.
