Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around how PC users can read PowerPoint (PPT) files, particularly in the context of accessing lecture slides shared by physicists. Participants explore various software options and methods for viewing and uploading PPT files.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about software options for reading PPT files on PCs, noting that a Mac can handle them without issue.
  • Another participant suggests using the Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer, providing a link to the download page.
  • A different suggestion is made to use OpenOffice as an alternative for reading PPT files.
  • A participant expresses interest in uploading a PPT file to their website and seeks advice on how to do so.
  • One response clarifies that uploading a PPT file is similar to uploading any other file, recommending the use of FTP and providing guidance on linking to the file.
  • Another participant mentions using the "Save As Web Page" function in PowerPoint 2003 as a potential method for sharing presentations online, though they express uncertainty about whether animations would be preserved.
  • Lastly, a suggestion is made to screen-capture a video of the presentation as an alternative method for sharing content online.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants present multiple software options and methods for reading and uploading PPT files, indicating a lack of consensus on a single best approach. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the effectiveness of different methods, particularly concerning the preservation of animations.

Contextual Notes

Some suggestions depend on specific versions of software, and there is uncertainty about the features available in different PowerPoint versions, such as the handling of animations when saving as a web page.

DOES ANYONE know of where to download something that will read powerpoint files?

the Mac I am using does fine. but someone else who I think uses a PC is having trouble

some physicists are putting their lecture slides out in PPT form
everybody should be able to read these files who wants

what should the generic PC user do, to read PPT?

A further question on PPT...how do I go about uploading a PPT file onto my website? I've been self-learning PPT and would like to get some of the animations and such up on the net. Any ideas or pointers welcome,

Thanks,

Richard

A PowerPoint file is just like any other file, as far as the web is concerned. Upload the file via (e.g.) ftp to the server, putting it in the appropriate directory. Then, either give people the entire path to the file, or put a link to it in an html file.

You could use the Save As Web Page function in Powerpoint 2003 (maybe in 2000 as well?). I'm not sure if you get animations, but its worth a try. All else fails you could always screen-capture a video of your presentation playing and upload that instead :)
