Undergrad Does the distance affect the landing of a bouncing die?
So would a BB actually be affected by quantum mechanics? I am just wondering if quantum mechanics theoretically happens on the scale of inches, feet, miles, ect, or if it is only something that occurs at the level of photons, electrons, ect. -

Undergrad Does the distance affect the landing of a bouncing die?
Lets say you have a die and a galton board (a vertical array of pegs used to demonstrate the normal distribution), you build some kind of apparatus that will allow you to drop the die from the exact location, with the exact degree of tilt, ect, repeatedly. You also have a super slow motion... -

Can dog breeding truly be considered evolution?
The reason I excluded mutations, is because my specific question is how far could an animal be changed with pure breeding. If your goal was to continue to increase a certain trait in an animal how far could that be increased without mutations, and whether their is some limit, and to increase...- 111111

Can dog breeding truly be considered evolution?
I want to clairfy something: Is it true that without DNA mutations it would be impossible to start with a population of x wild wolfs and breed a chihuahua, or poodle? Lets say your only goal is to start with a very large population of wolfs who on average weigh 100 lbs, your goal is to create a...- 111111

Undergrad Geometic Series that sums to circle?
This probably doesn't make a difference but the area of circle is equal to pi*r^2 where r is the radius of the circle. But I don't know why that would deflate the attractiveness of the procedure. Why couldn't the ratio be the sqrt(2) or something?- 111111

Undergrad Geometic Series that sums to circle?
Does anyone know if there is a way to divide up the area of a circle using similar polygons, with a common ratio? I was just curious if there is a way, or if it has been proven impossible. For example, I tried inscribing a square inside a circle and making an infinite series of triangles with...- 111111

Graduate What exactly is the definition of a "quantum event"?
I would like to understand quantum mechanics and physics in general better. From what I understand, quantum mechanics basically says that at the smallest size of the universe there is particles or strings of which everything is made of, which jump around randomly, and unpredictably. Also from...- 111111

How did the massive water line explosion occur?
My guess right now is that it was a drainage line that was fed by hundreds or more street drains located at a higher altitude which caused the water at the bottom to be under huge pressure, except that doesn't explain why it did it in surges where it was completely calm and then suddenly...- 111111

How did the massive water line explosion occur?
I saw this video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDfZdfeJ1nc&feature=related . Does anyone know how this happened? I read through some of the comments and no one seems to have a good explanation.- 111111

Undergrad Calculate Probability of Winning w/ Advantage & Bankroll
I'm not sure if that will work for what I am talking about, maybe if you give a demonstration. But anyways, shortly after posting this thread I figured out an easy way to do it by using geometric series.- 111111

Undergrad Calculate Probability of Winning w/ Advantage & Bankroll
Say you are playing game in which you are betting money and you believe you have an advantage, (if you bet $X and win, you get $2X back). Given a bankroll X an bet unit of Y and an advantage of A, what is the probability of at some point having MX dollars, assuming you play until you either run...- 111111

DNA Deterioration: Causes, Effects & Preservation
Yes free radicals damaging DNA. So are you saying oxidation does not cause problems? If that is so then how come it is seen as one of the main causes of aging? This is what I would like to know: when you see someone who is say 100 years old, they look a lot different than they looked when...- 111111
