Favorite and least favorite branch of chemistry?

I was just curious to see what everybody enjoyed the most (or enjoyed the least) in terms of chemistry classes. I finally get to take Inorganic next year, which I feel like I am going to enjoy a lot along with biochemistry.

Not sure where else to ask this -- Can I teach myself Diff Eqs?

So I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section, so mods, please move this as you see fit. I am a sophomore biochemistry major looking to go to graduate school for biochemistry or evolutionary biology (decision should be made by next semester after I take biochem formally). Unfortunately, I...

OChem Tosylation Reaction: Predicting Major Product with p-TsOH Catalyst

Extremely, thank you. I was mainly unsure of that exact point. "Is is still treated as a lone hydroxyl group, or is it treated as a part of a group that does not necessarily obey that tosylate rule?" That clears everything up.

OChem Tosylation Reaction: Predicting Major Product with p-TsOH Catalyst

My original thought was stability, but I am not sure. We were never shown an example problem where there was any more than one -OH group in class, nor were we shown what could happen if there are two oxygen-centric functional groups. I just do not know how to go about dealing with them since we...

OChem Tosylation Reaction: Predicting Major Product with p-TsOH Catalyst

Homework Statement Predict the major product in the following reaction (Hint: Consider intra-molecular reaction) Homework Equations HO2C-(CH2)3-CH(OH)-CH3 ------------cat. p-TsOH, heat----------> ? The Attempt at a Solution Essentially what I cannot figure out is if the tosic acid is going...

    Modern Physics Text for self-study

Just put it on my Christmas list! Thanks.

Does glucose in its cyclic structure react with HI ?

Unless you use a catapult. I agree that HI by itself will not reduce it, you are correct. With an input of energy (heat) though?

    Modern Physics Text for self-study

As the title implies, I am looking for a decent introductory modern physics text for self-study purposes. I'm a Biochemistry major, so this is partially for my own enjoyment and partially for preparation for Physical Chemistry II. I know that there are a lot of threads on this, but I always like...

Does glucose in its cyclic structure react with HI ?

    Could you explain why not?

    Independent Study: What is next?

Thank you; that was the trend that I was seeing, but some schools were irritatingly giving me an abbreviation (PHYSXXXX) and made me run around trying to look up a course description. It didn't help that I was one my phone. At any rate, thank you again. I am going to get a book for Christmas to...

Does glucose in its cyclic structure react with HI ?

I believe so, yes. I think that the glucose would be reduced and would give n-hexane. It has been a while since I've looked at anything like this (which is bad since I have a final coming up), but I believe that an O-C bond would break and hydroxyl groups would lyse off from there. I know that...

What is the relation between the density of vapor and the

PV=nRT where: P= absolute pressure V= absolute volume T= absolute temperature n= number of moles of gas R= universal gas constant (8.3145 J/mol*K) From the equation, you can see that pressure (P) is directly proportional to the concentration or number of molecules (n) and the temperature of the...

    Independent Study: What is next?

That sounds interesting. We have two physical chemists on staff and a couple of physicists I believe, although they are adjuncts for whatever reason. I doubt that I would have the skills to apply to a graduate program in physics myself, but hopefully I can find something where I can apply such...

    Independent Study: What is next?

Hello everyone, I am new to these forums, so if this question is in the wrong place, I will relocate it. Long story short, my school has no real physics department anymore, but I have an insatiable appetite for it. I was wondering what the next course in a physics sequence would be after...
