Find Synodic Period of Jupiter | Astronomy Help for Introductory Course
Actually, I did find a formula... P = sidereal motion of a planet PEarth = sidereal motion of Earth = 1 year S = synodic period 1/P = 1/PEarth - 1/S for superior planets 1/P = 1/PEarth + 1/S for inferior planets That would have helped me in the beginning- cassiopeiae

Why Should We Care About Events That Don't Affect Us?
It's one thing to care or feel empathy for someone who dies, or for those who were close to them. It is another to get wrapped up in it. It is not wrong to care, it is, for most people, natural. If you are an extremist in either direction of caring or not caring, it is not healthy. If...- cassiopeiae

Find Synodic Period of Jupiter | Astronomy Help for Introductory Course
Ok, that's where I got confused. [the "synodic period" of the fixed stars is 365.24 days (approximately)] I knew that, but for some reason, that part of the question was eluding me...as I smack myself on the forehead...duh. Thanks for your help!- cassiopeiae

Find Synodic Period of Jupiter | Astronomy Help for Introductory Course
I am taking an introductory astronomy course and am having problems finding the calculations needed for this problem. It is not a homework problem, just an extra question at the end of a chapter. I have asked my professor about this, and he is not sure either...any help is greatly appreciated...- cassiopeiae

Uses of Philosophy - Is it the most useless subject on Earth?
Actually, I think it is the most useful. If you think in terms of physics and use Einstein as an example, without philosophy would he have ever come up with the Theory of Relativity? Most groundbreaking advances in science start with philosophy...IMO. The theoretical physicist is also a...- cassiopeiae

Undergrad Apprehension about becoming a physicist
There are ways to start on the path without getting yourself in a bind when it comes to playing "catch-up". I have had some doubts myself about pursuing a physics degree, but for different reasons. I have 27 years old and after many years of being out of university, I have decided I am sick of...- cassiopeiae

Can We Eliminate Violence and Evil in the World?
What would one really classify as evil, anyway? What may be to one, may not be to another. When it comes to violence, we are violent every day, some of us may not realize it...killing a bug, or even breathing, we kill or injure something with everything we do. Just because a bug or microbe...- cassiopeiae

Graduate Possible Consequences of Time Travel: A Scientific Perspective
Energy cannot be destroyed, so technically, if you went back in time, you would only be transferring your 'mass' (energy). There would be no dupicate copy to destroy. Though we (humans) view time as linear, the universe does not work upon this principle. So, since you exist now, if you were...- cassiopeiae

How do you cope with your mortality?
The main thing involved with not being able to 'cope with mortality' is fear. Fear is caused by the understanding that there is no control over this fact of life. One must accept it as the only one truth anyone can know. Once the fear is gone, it is not an issue.- cassiopeiae

Where Do We Draw the Line Between Good and Evil?
Good and evil are only two opposite extremes of the same thing. The only boundaries lie in one's perception.- cassiopeiae

High School H. G. Wells' The Invisible Man
Since all physical forms give off energy, would it be possible to develop a device to counter act these frequencies (not sure if that's the correct term). Almost like a cloaking device...trick the observer into not seeing? I was reading these posts and thought back to the old tales of Native...- cassiopeiae
