Insights How to Self-Study Calculus - Comments

I would like to share a recommendation: G.M. Fichtenholz "Differential and Integral Calculus". Fairly unpopular outside of the 'post-Soviet' countries, but it is among my personal favourites. A bit on the lengthy side, but it keeps a very approachable and 'eager to explain' tone just as easily...

Vector Wave Equation: Uses & Benefits

I forgot about one more method of solution. Much less strict, but more than enough for a lot of the problems that can be, very crudely, summarised as "there may be an analytic exact solution but we can't find it": Inverse Problems. If you have an approximate model and some of the eigenvalues...

Vector Wave Equation: Uses & Benefits

You need it pretty much all the time where it is the resulting solution of a partial differential equation. You will encounter them everywhere from hydrodynamics to electrodynamics (fiberoptics for a textbook example), really. As of the difficulty of working them out, sometimes it is the only...

Calculus Where can I find an extensive table of integrals?

Possibly, it's possible that they use same shared libraries that originate form Maxima or just use it shamelessly through some API. To be honest it has been a pretty long time since I was involved with Sage. I can't deny that I might have confused something or operate under obsolete information...

Calculus Where can I find an extensive table of integrals?

True and great point about Maxima. Although I must say that I've had found SageMath as something a bit more if not approachable than at least easier to build my own modules with. It's free and open source, just as Maxima, but written in Python instead of Common Lisp making the barrier to entry...

Do Plasma Phenomena Indicate Imminent Earthquakes?

Don't get me wrong, I'm just as curious as you are but could not find anything reputable almost instantly. It's usually a bad sign, so I would like to hear geophysicist say a few words on the topic. EDIT: This got sent unintentionally, I wasn't finished writing. Here's the rest: However, as...

Do Plasma Phenomena Indicate Imminent Earthquakes?

Can you cite anything about it? Most of the materials I can find are on Washington Post blog and National Geographic. As far as I looked, the relevant term is Earthquake Light. It seems to be vague and most of the explanations that are not (as aptly described in National Geographic article) 'UFO...

How would I take the laplace transform of f(t)= te^tsin^2(t)?

Still, it's a standard case (I have a vague recall of this exact function class being important in telecommunication). Perfectly doable via integration by parts. Is this where you got stuck?

How would I take the laplace transform of f(t)= te^tsin^2(t)?

You mean t et sin(2t)? What's causing you the problem? It is pretty straight-forward application of the definition case.

Relativity Finding a Good Book on GR: Experiences & Resources

No, sorry. I have assumed that they used titles as in original (German) edition. It's this https://www.amazon.com/dp/0387406158/?tag=pfamazon01-20 ; Classical Mathematical Physics, Dynamical Systems and Field Theories. Original four volumes were, as it seems, glued together into Classical (vol 1...

Relativity Finding a Good Book on GR: Experiences & Resources

I would add W. Thirring "Mathematical Physics", volumes 1 and 2 (solid introduction to classical and relativistic field theory in the language of differential forms and manifold calculus). If not as a main resource, than to at least expand/clarify maths in other books. Rather old, but among my...

Calculus Pickup and review textbook / material?

No problem, especially in regard to languages. I honestly know only enough to work through some of the books that never got translated and would not dare to start a conversation in Russian ;). But here are some of the authors who wrote (at least in my opinion) mostly gems: Vladimir I. Arnold...

Calculus Pickup and review textbook / material?

To be frank with you, I don't recall having any strong feelings toward it, only that I have had it borrowed from a library for a while. It likely means that it was rather bland and mediocre or I just found something much better for my taste. After thinking a bit more, I can add a...

Entropy of the distribution as a function of time

Not really about entropy, but are you certain about this expression? It is always evaluated to 2 between the parentheses. Shouldn't it be (1 - (-1)**len(dim)…) or something similar? I'll look further into the code and try to help, but the quoted code above made me scratch my head.

Calculus Pickup and review textbook / material?

I can recommend G.M. Fichtenholz "Differential and Integral Calculus", volumes 1 and 2 should cover all of the material you talk about. It's fairly unheard of outside of the post-Soviet countries, but after being exposed to both sides (USA/UK and Continental Europe/Russia) I am recommending it...
