Trail - vscode extension for research projects
There is nothing exactly new here, just a set of convenience tools bundled together. If I were using some fancy new tech for a diff engine, or something, I would understand the need for patents. But, on the other hand, I'm an idiot when it comes to most things except my precise interests. So...- diegzumillo

Trail - vscode extension for research projects
Thanks for sharing that. It's validating to read other people's difficulties with this as well. And sure, there are infinite ways of solving this problem, with better organization mostly, but existing tools that help like GIT as well. But I do believe there is value in a system like this that...- diegzumillo

Trail - vscode extension for research projects
Hey there I started working on this project mainly for my own benefit, because I'm very disorganized. My research is very computationally intensive, whether in physics or AI. So I generate lots of programs and data, and I lose track of it all. So far I don't know if this is of interest to...- diegzumillo

Graduate Where to find black hole datasets
I do have a laptop with linux but it's a decade old, the poor thing. I'm not gonna make it crunch numbers, that's elderly abuse!- diegzumillo

Graduate Where to find black hole datasets
Oh I haven't started analyzing it yet. Other things came up. But their own program seems promising, at least to preprocess the data a little. The raw data seems very complex. But it's linux only. I'll have to see how to deal with that eventually. EDIT: You can find more about Chandra, data and...- diegzumillo

Graduate Where to find black hole datasets
I found a few, yeah. But most are not complete enough, or were preprocessed in inconvenient ways for what I wanted. I did eventually find Chandra's website, which provides all kinds of data and even a data analysis tool. And the downloads worked!- diegzumillo

Graduate Where to find black hole datasets
Hi everyone, I'm trying to download the 4XMM-DR9 EPIC Source Catalogue for some X-ray spectral analysis near black holes. The download links on the XMM-Newton site are broken, and the archive ones are working but the actual download keeps failing before reaching 10% completion (it's a large...- diegzumillo

Job Skills Switching careers to software development
You are right. It did not occur to me this was important information. But if anyone's curious, I did get a job as a developer! :) Good benefits and decent starting salary. I still feel bad about leaving the academia, and hopefully I can still integrate physics research in my life. For anyone...- diegzumillo

Job Skills Switching careers to software development
Hi all In my country, and with the pandemic aggravating affairs, an academic career seems unlikely for me at the moment. It's what I have been preparing for, I finished my PhD and started looking into post doc positions nearby, but no luck so far. So people advised me to try becoming a software...- diegzumillo

Undergrad Average of prime factors growth
Sigh. Sometimes I hate my ADD-riddled brain. I'm staring at your code, then at my code, then at my plot, then at your data, and I could not understand why we were getting different results. In my laziness I did the fit without using the actual numbers, but their indices instead! since I was...- diegzumillo

Undergrad Average of prime factors growth
(I had a gif of Mike Myers saying "ONE MILLION DOLLARS" but it was causing problems to post it here.) Anyway, a million. I know, I know, in the realm of number theory this must be laughably small.- diegzumillo

Undergrad Average of prime factors growth
That's unexpected. I got some really specific numbers in there and I can't find a good fit with just that integration constant. I wonder if that fit I got only works for that range I used.- diegzumillo

Undergrad Average of prime factors growth
Nice! The expression is definitely recognizable. The differences come from counting all factors, not just the unique prime factors. Do you have any more theorems in that hat of yours that could include multiplicities as well?- diegzumillo
