How Should I Address a Tough Differential Equations Exam with My Professor?
Oh man, I haven't heard many marks but the highest mark I've heard of in my class is 82. I'm a bit late on this I suppose. If I don't clear 65% I'll probably make myself take the course again next semester as humiliating as that will be in a small and competitive department, although this...- ECmathstudent

How Should I Address a Tough Differential Equations Exam with My Professor?
Well, as I said before, we've got an unusually strong class, partially since this was the first year that this course was offered first and second semester. The math and physics honours students are all taking it first semester to use it as a pre-req for courses, so there's about 7 of the 20ish...- ECmathstudent

How Should I Address a Tough Differential Equations Exam with My Professor?
I wrote my differential equations exam Friday, and have since found myself in an awkward position. My school is small, so engineering physics and math all share the same class, and this year we had a really strong class. I was pulling along in the mid-70's, but that was due to a very bad quiz...- ECmathstudent

Summer getting too hard for you? Post your Fall Schedule to cool down
I posted here already, but my schedule got changed around now; Fall: Differential Equations: Basic course in ordinary differential equations, 300 level course. Number Theory: Basic course in elementary number theory, 300 level course. Mathematical Problem Solving: This should be awesome, it's...- ECmathstudent

Summer getting too hard for you? Post your Fall Schedule to cool down
Right now my semester is looking like: O.D.E. Elementary Number Theory Problem Solving(basically Putnam training) Numerical Analysis Intro to computer science I'm not sure how it'll go, it could be too slack; or quite difficult. Definitely need to put work in on ode's after I slacked...- ECmathstudent

Applying for REUs and Student Research Opportunities: A Resume Template
Considering how many students here ask for advice on applying for REUs and other student research opportunities, has anyone ever put together a resume template for that sort of application? I would definitely appreciate it, and I'm sure plenty of other people would, also.- ECmathstudent

Other Should I Become a Mathematician?
I'm starting research this summer on a linear algebra problem, I only really have a vague idea of what I'll be doing, outside of setting up algorithms and going over journals. How often should you check with your adviser to make sure you aren't on a stupid tangent, or how do you even figure out...- ECmathstudent

Winning physics/math competitions
This is something I've wondered about, a few guys I've talked to have said people put their Putnam results onto their resumes and grad schools applications. Does it really have any effect? I've half-thought of writing it, I was able to get a couple of questions when I looked over the one this...- ECmathstudent

Mean Value Theorem problem, where did I go wrong?
And I just realized I missed the day where we learned Darboux's theorem, and spent 4 hours working on problems trying to derive it on my own.- ECmathstudent

Graduate Does Every Field Have a Subfield Isomorphic to Q or Z mod p?
I just wrote an exam in Algebra II, and one of our true or false questions got me thinking. Does every field have a subfield which is isomorphic to the Q or Z mod p? I put it as true, for the wrong reasons, vaguely remembering a similar statement about integral domains and mixing it up. So...- ECmathstudent
