Graduate Count & Describe Automorphisms of Z_3 (Set of Integers Modulo 3)
Okay well, I figured it out. Alpha was defined a few pages earlier as a root of x^2+1 (a polynomial with coeff's in Z_3[x]). Thanks for pointing out what should have been obvious to me.- erraticimpulse

Graduate Count & Describe Automorphisms of Z_3 (Set of Integers Modulo 3)
Please bear with me as I don't have latex. This is a homework question I have and I don't even know if it makes sense: How many Z_3 (set of integers modulo 3) vector space automorphisms of Z_3(alpha) are there? Describe them. I'm not sure if alpha is supposed to be the root of some...- erraticimpulse

Graduate Notation of ideals in ring theory
Okay well, it turned out that the idea from wolfram was more confusing than helpful. There's a scarce amount of information in my text and notes on PID's. The only conjectures that I feel safe in making: if given gcd(a,b)=d then gcd(a,d)=d and gcd(b,d)=d. Not sure how helpful those are though. I...- erraticimpulse

Graduate Notation of ideals in ring theory
So right now I'm trying to solve this problem in ring theory for homework. The question pertains to proving that in a PID, D, if a,b are elements of D then the gcd of a and b can be written as a linear combination. In any event I know where I have to go but I'm stuck on this one bit of notation...- erraticimpulse

Chemistry Career in Chemistry: Level of Difficulty?
Hey guys, Right now I'm on my way to getting my bachelor's in mathematics. However, I've recently considered double majoring in chemistry as well. Could anyone attest to the level of difficulty in a chemistry major? Is it comparable to a mathematics major or less? Thanks in advance!- erraticimpulse

Graduate Images under exp in complex plane
Describe the image under exp of the line with equation y = x. To do this you should find an equation (at least parametrically) for the image (you can start with the parametric form x = t; y = t), plot it reasonably carefully, and explain what happens in the limits as t approaches infinity and t...- erraticimpulse

Is a career in mathematics the key to success in intelligence agencies?
That's a question I've often asked myself... heh :-p just kidding. But yeah, it does sound pretty interesting. As a gov position it's quite likely you could continue in school at taxpayers expense and possibly work into other departments - where ever your interests are... (spy, spy, spy...- erraticimpulse

Almost done with math, what now?
Some of those fields look as if they have little if anything at all in common with math. In effect I would have to take a buttload of remedial work, right? Don't get me wrong though. It's not that I'm not interested in math education I just want to know what my options are. If I ended up as a...- erraticimpulse
