Graduate Baryon Asymmetry explained by MWI
I did some cursory searching, and I couldn't find this idea being discussed, so I thought it would be a good idea to bring it up here. Is there any reason why a valid explanation for baryon asymmetry isn't that we happen to live in a world branch where there was a significant asymmetry in the...- Galap

Graduate Geometry of perspective: apparent projected distance
I'm working on an animated short, and want to find ways to quickly calculate the positions of objects on the drawing plane from their changing positions in the imaginary 3D space. The thing that has me slightly stuck at the moment is figuring out how to creata a 'moving forward' loop in...- Galap

'diels alder' like reaction with nonconjugated dienes
Can a reaction like the diels alder reaction occur if the diene is not conjugated, but can have the proper geometric configuration for the same electron transfer? http://i.imgur.com/sFhLg.jpg Image of example. If my question is unclear, I can clarify further if necessary. -

Undergrad Window Fog Evaporation: Why Does It Happen?
Davenn I tested both of your ideas, the first by moving my head in a cricle, creating a ring of 'center breath'. This did not seem to affect the evaporation, as if your first conjecture were true, the center of the foggy area would also evaporate quickly, which it did not. Upon breathing at a...- Galap

Undergrad Vibration in vacuum. What would happen?
In thought experiments, things tend to happen forever if you take away all the factors that would impede them. That statement is basically just a generalization of Newton...- Galap

Entropy is the fact that, in a system, there tend to be many more states we call 'uninteresting' than states we call 'interesting'.- Galap

Undergrad Window Fog Evaporation: Why Does It Happen?
Everyone who lives in a region that gets cold knows that if you exhale onto a window, the water vapor in your breath condenses onto the surface. Because the air is dry, this condensation evaporates. What puzzles me about it is why it does so from the edge of the fogged region to the center, as...- Galap

Dissociation of HCl in Ethanol: Factors Affecting Ability
To see whether something dissociates to a large extent, we must see whether the initial state or the dissociated state is more stable. In the case of water, HCl and H2O ends up being less stable than chloride and hydronium. However in the case of ethanol, a protonated alcohol has a VERY low pKa... -

How do I classify acids and bases in chemistry?
Look at the stability of the conjugate. The more stable the conjugate, the stronger the acid or base. -

Why does helium have a greater first ionization energy than hydrogen?
He means that for a given energy level the orbitals of hydrogen are the largest. Chlorine is only bigger because it has more electrons in higher shells, 2s for example. However, if you could excite the electrons in the hydrogen atom, promoting them to 2s and higher, then hydrogen's 2s orbital... -

Why is the N in pyrrolidine sp2 hybridized?
If you're talking about pyrrole, then the nitrogen would be sp2 hybridized because it is part of an aromatic pi system. An aromatic ring gives enormous stability because it creates (in the case of pyrrole) 3 bonding orbitals, all of which are of lower energy than the p orbitals. This is... -

Which is More Polar: Ethyl Acetate or Nitrobutane?
I would say the nitro compound is more polar because NO2 is a very strong electron drawing group. -

Graduate Why Is Quantum Mechanics So Difficult to Understand?
Ahh: the old 'shut up and calculate'... Well, what I have to say is that while the point that was trying to be made was that eventually our current understanding reaches an end. There is a place where our theories are no longer adequate explanations to the things we find. You go deeper and...- Galap

Graduate How Do Photons Relate to Light's Wave-Particle Duality?
So ultimately the bottom line with the photoelectric effect is that while it did not require a corpuscular-like explanation, it is what led scientists to consider it.- Galap
