Conditions inside a protoplanetary disc
Yes, you're right! I did post this question before - and I forgot completely! Thanks for answering both my posts. I was a fan of the old-style science fiction, before fantasy sci-fi took over. I was trying to write something that bent as few laws of physics as possible. Looks like I only...- Galexy

Conditions inside a protoplanetary disc
Summary:: Conditions inside a protoplanetary disc. I have just finished writing a fictional story that takes place inside a protoplanetary disc. Now I think I should determine how realistic it is. My question -- Somewhere in a typical PP disc, the gas pressure would be in the range of one...- Galexy

DART mission launches to test asteroid deflection
I also have a question about DART? If the spacecraft does not hit the target exactly head on (which is likely), some of the collision energy will go into rotational energy of the target moon. A 'glancing blow' would cause most of this energy to become angular momentum of the moon. We will not...- Galexy

An alternative to the word 'Schlieren'?
Well... This was my first posting on this venue. I have to say I'm not very pleased with the pedantic and smug nature of some of the replies. This was meant to be a light hearted comment soliciting for some imaginative (and easy to spell) alternative names for a common phenomenon. Lighten up guys.- Galexy

An alternative to the word 'Schlieren'?
Yes, I am uncomfortable with all these words. If I used them in 'street' conversation I would sound like a geek. The reason why I picked out the word 'schlieren' is because I have often been forced to use it in conversation; and I always get funny looks.- Galexy

An alternative to the word 'Schlieren'?
I have always been amazed by the fact that there is no word in English for the visible density waves in a transparent material. The phenomenon is so common that an English term should have been coined long ago. I am uncomfortable using the German word, 'schlieren', but it is all that is...- Galexy

Atmospheric pressure inside a protoplanetary disc
Thank you very much for your reply. In my story, I was assuming that the protoplanetary disk had not compressed to the extent that nuclear ignition had taken place. So little is known about the interior of such a beast that I figured I had lots of room to exercise my imagination. If the...- Galexy

Atmospheric pressure inside a protoplanetary disc
When I say "human presence" I don't mean completely unprotected (although my story characters happen to be naked, except for oxygen masks). LOL- Galexy

Atmospheric pressure inside a protoplanetary disc
Summary:: Could there be a place in a newly forming protoplanetary disc where the gas pressure and temperature would be anywhere close to survivable? I am writing a fiction story that takes place there, and I want to know how far from reality this premise would be. When a protoplanetary disc...- Galexy
