Physics What options are available for a physics graduate struggling to find a job?
Many people have suggested grad school. Have you considered certification for a specific positions that might interest you? As a physics major, certification in medical/radiological/health physics could be an option if you're interested in maintaining diagnostic imaging equipment (NMR, CT)...- geophysics10

Building a Langmuir Probe: Seeking Driver Circuit Help
Here are some Google image results with many schematic diagrams from Langmuir probes. If you understand the theory behind Langmuir probes, designing your own circuitry should be fairly straightforward. However, the complexity of the setup depends on whether you plan on reading digital or...- geophysics10

Enclosed charge of an electron cloud with a given charge density function.
Thank you. I took a drive and realized that some of the distribution must lie outside the Bohr radius because it is an average value for the distance of the electron, and that when r is at infinity the electron and proton must both be point charges at the origin. I'm glad I came back to...- geophysics10

Enclosed charge of an electron cloud with a given charge density function.
I have a conceptual problem. Homework Statement I was given a charge distribution for an electron cloud of a hydrogen atom in the ground state - ignoring the nucleus. Homework Equations charge density: ρ=charge of electron/(pi*Bohr radius^3)*exp(-2r/Bohr radius) The Attempt at a...- geophysics10

Collection of Lame Jokes
My math prof. back in the 90's used to start his lectures with an update of his marital life, and slipped it in one day during a lecture on limits. "Is there anything worse than dividing by zero? Marrying the wrong person. But in mathematics, no."- geophysics10

Graduate Is Antimatter a Fundamental Property or a Label?
I'm not sure I understand your analogy. Failure of a string under tension at a specific place is due to defects in the material. Are you suggesting an inherant asymmetry? Or considering a perfect string which deforms uniformly and a probabilistic asymmetry?- geophysics10

Connection between Freezing Europe and the BP spill
The gulf loop current is a natural equilibirum system but also a nonlinear system which is dependent on many variables: temperature, salinity, wind, flora and fauna, changing boundary conditions, the list goes on. And, the issue with boundary conditions of a localized Earth system is that they...- geophysics10

Non-existence of God, Hawking, Spontaneous creation, law of gravity
Yes, you could assume that God precludes the Big Bang, but now you are just back to square one. What precludes God? Is it turtles all the way down? It is not enough to not disprove an idea, it also requires at least a sliver of evidence. A solid theory requires concrete evidence and...- geophysics10

Graduate Quantum Confusion: Philosophical Assumptions Behind Mechanics
If I told you the philosophical assumptions of physics were intrinsically unknowable and provided a reasonable explanation why, would you continue to ask that question? I'll give the usual answer and then go on to provide a helpful answer and point you in the right direction to form your...- geophysics10
