Calculate the HCl concentration in H2O from the conductivity
Thank you all for the help so far. I have tried to take my data and calculate #moles HCl by using both pH and conductance. The answers disagree significantly, so I think I must be doing something wrong, and would like to check. For one case, my final pH is 1.66, and my final conductance is... -

Calculate the HCl concentration in H2O from the conductivity
Hi y'all, I think this is my first time in the chemistry section of this forum, so thank you in advance for your patience with what is (I'm pretty sure) an elementary question. I've googled around for this a bit, but my last acid chemistry study was in 2002 or so, so the reading I am doing is... -

Electrical Flourescent light ballast wiring
Ah, yes, actually. There is a dimmer on a different light on the same breaker switch. Is it possible that could be the problem?- gpsimms

Electrical Flourescent light ballast wiring
Yeah. I removed the ballast from the fixture entirely. I bought "bypass" led bulbs. The pins on one end are labelled "L" and "N" and the pins on the other end are not labelled. I connected the black wire from the ceiling in parallel to the 4 line pins and the white wire in parallel to the 4...- gpsimms

Electrical Flourescent light ballast wiring
Thanks everyone for the advice. I had already purchased the ballast, so gave it a go, and the lights worked fine. But... The old ballast housing did not fit over the new ballast, and I got frustrated and decided to try the LED suggestion. Wiring up the LEDs to bypass the ballast entirely...- gpsimms

Electrical Flourescent light ballast wiring
Ok very much amateur here, appreciate any advice. So, the guy at home depot suggested the ballast was the reason my flourescent kitchen light goes out occasionally. The light worked well for the first 3 years of ownership. Now, it doesn't buzz or flicker, it just occasionally doesn't work...- gpsimms

Laminar flow in a tube, heat transfer coefficient-sanity check
Yup. After sleeping on it, I felt pretty correct about what I had written. But it is nice to have had someone else look it over. Thank you for your time! Go Blue! '06 School of Education- gpsimms

Laminar flow in a tube, heat transfer coefficient-sanity check
Hi there, Hopefully this is a very easy question and you all can just confirm this for me. When calculating heat transfer into a fluid from a heated tube, is it correct to say that the heat transfer coefficient is *not* dependent on the tube diameter? So, if we solve for T_{out}, we get...- gpsimms

Chemistry 35yo combustion chemistry PhD, free time and still no plan
I'd be lying if I said I hadn't considered the stay-at-home-dad route. And, for the record, I don't feel particularly emasculated by it. I think staying home with children could be really rewarding. However, I don't think it's accurate to say staying at home maximizes income. I am aware of the...- gpsimms

Chemistry 35yo combustion chemistry PhD, free time and still no plan
Thanks for the feedback! I definitely think part of the appeal of this position is the 'take it as I go' aspect. For example, I plan on spending time this year teaching and also applying for research and industry jobs. I don't really have any decisions to make until/unless I get a job offer from...- gpsimms

Chemistry 35yo combustion chemistry PhD, free time and still no plan
Hi there, TL/DR - I have a community college job with a sufficient salary. Should I be happy with that + freetime or should I try to get a job which really uses my PhD? If I go with happy freetime option, are any of the projects I propose interesting AND feasible? If I am too lazy to follow...- gpsimms

Solving Long Mach Nozzle Shape Problem for MBMS
Thank you again for the insight/discussion! It's appreciated and very helpful. This would be nice. I doubt that I can control pressure very precisely. The best I could do would be to attach a precision needle valve someplace to the chamber and adjust the valve to regulate pressure. This...- gpsimms

Solving Long Mach Nozzle Shape Problem for MBMS
Thanks for the quick reply! To answer your questions: 1.) It is best for the flow to undergo supersonic expansion. The chamber between the nozzle and the skimmer will be held at approximately 0.5 torr. As such, molecular collisions can cause the beam intensity to drop. If, instead, there is...- gpsimms

Solving Long Mach Nozzle Shape Problem for MBMS
Hi y'all, thanks in advance to anyone who knows a bit more about compressible/isentropic flow than me for the help, I have an interesting problem which I've been working on for a bit. Basically, I would like to measure species coming out of a reactor using molecular beam mass spectrometry...- gpsimms
