How to prepare for a math quickness/accuracy pre-interviews?
Hello, I am applying for some jobs that have pre-interview tests. Here is one description: This is for a finance job, and I am an electrical engineering major with a pretty high gpa. So I obviously have a solid math background, but what should I expect from these kinds of tests? How...- jmcgraw

Is the Resistance of this Easy Circuit Really Just 10 Ohms?
I dunno... It just seems to me like perhaps a little bit of the current would get through. I guess if I looked at it as the current taking the path of least resistance, then yeah, I guess it's pretty intuitive. (Although, obviously, such an analogy couldn't extend to resistors in...- jmcgraw

Is the Resistance of this Easy Circuit Really Just 10 Ohms?
Is the resistance of this circuit 10 ohms? http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/9229/littlecircuitro8.jpg I can't prove anything to myself since the resistors aren't in parallel or series. I do notice that the potential at the top of the right side resistor is the same as at the bottom... So...- jmcgraw

Probability - Independence Question
I think I just got more confused. Isn't the intersection of B with not-A the same as not-A? giving the fraction to be simply 1? Obviously I must be missing something, big time.- jmcgraw

Probability - Independence Question
I'm trying to get the idea of independent events well grounded in my mind, but I'm having some difficulty. First of all, what would a venn diagram for independent events look like? I know you have the two events intersecting, and the intersection is equal to the product of the probabilities...- jmcgraw

MATLAB MATLAB vs Maple/Mathematica for EE Major
Yeah, I finally got around to teaching myself how to code LaTex over the last few weeks, and it can't be beat. It's just awesome. I think I will even use it for non-math papers, now that I found a MLA style file. Once you get the hang of it, it's actually easier and much more efficient than...- jmcgraw

MATLAB MATLAB vs Maple/Mathematica for EE Major
Well, MATLAB is explicitly required by my engineering school, so I just went ahead and got it. I'll put off any other purchases and give Maxima a try. Thanks!- jmcgraw

MATLAB MATLAB vs Maple/Mathematica for EE Major
Thanks. Aside from typesetting, what are the differences between MATLAB/Maple/Mathematica? Are they all basically the same thing with different strength/weaknesses? Or are there any major fundamental differences?- jmcgraw

MATLAB MATLAB vs Maple/Mathematica for EE Major
I just bought MATLAB because it is absolutely required at the university I will be attending in the fall. While I've only given MATLAB a quick overview, it seems that it's probably not something I would be able to use for writing papers. It also doesn't look very efficient for quick graphing...- jmcgraw

LaTeX Finding a Good Free LaTeX Editor
What's a good freeware latex editor? I've been trying to install LEd, but it's not going smoothly, so I don't want to waste anymore time if it's not worth it. Any suggestions?- jmcgraw

Schools What Do Math PhD Students Actually Do?
I just thought of another question... I remember a while back someone told me that you have to learn to read/write a mathematically relevant foreign language (German/Russian/French, any others?) in order to get a PhD in math. Is this true? I'm sort of hoping that it is. I'd really like to...- jmcgraw

Schools What Do Math PhD Students Actually Do?
How about courses on the history of mathematics if you are a math major? (do they even use the term "major" when talking about grad students?) That's something that has always interested me. Would it be easy to take those courses? I obviously have very little knowledge about grad school, so...- jmcgraw
