Undergrad What is Planck curvature and its significance in the expansion of the universe?
I was reading a paper by Starobinsky on spectrum of relict gravitational radiation. He uses the term Planck curvature as follows "We construct a model in which the universe was perpetually in the quantum state with the radius of curvature of the order of Planck curvature, and later left this...- kini.Amith

Classical A source for solved problems in Kinetic theory of gases
I am doing a course on statistical mechanics and we are using the textbook by Mehran Kardar. We are currently dealing with a chapter on kinetic theory. The problem is, I find the exercise problems to be quite tough (and many of my classmates agree with me), and there are no good solved examples...- kini.Amith

Graduate Basic problem in equilibrium thermodynamics
I was reading Thermodynamics by Herbert Callen. In the first chapter he makes the following statement. 'The basic problem of thermodynamics is the determination of the equilibrium state that eventually results after the removal of internal constraints in closed composite system.' Then he...- kini.Amith

Math required for Statistical and solid state physics
I have to take a graduate level statistical mech course and a solid state physics course next sem (starting in feb).As I will be dealing with these topics for the first time, I'd like to like to prepare myself for them by learning/revising the math involved in them. What are the mathematical...- kini.Amith

Quantum Which Intermediate Quantum Mechanics Textbook Covers Specific Topics Best?
Well these are textbooks recommended in the syllabus as given in the institute website. When the course starts, the professor may recommend one or two of these textbooks for the course. From what I heard, it is usually Sakurai. But I have heard my friends and seniors say bad things about the...- kini.Amith

Quantum Which Intermediate Quantum Mechanics Textbook Covers Specific Topics Best?
I just finished a first course in quantum mechanics based on Griffiths' textbook. I have to take an advanced qm course next sem which starts in Feb. I was planning to do some reading by then mostly on some specific topics like mathematical formalism of QM, spin and angular momenta, and identical...- kini.Amith

Graduate Can we accurately measure the momentum of a particle?
Reminds me of the energy time uncertainty Principle. So is this true of all observables? And is there any formula that tells to what accuracy we can measure the observable given the amount of time we observe it?- kini.Amith

Graduate Can we accurately measure the momentum of a particle?
Is there any law that prevents us from accurately measuring the momentum of a particle , just like the energy time uncertainty principle makes us observe the system for an infinite amount of time before we can be certain about its energy? I got this doubt because if we can do it, we will...- kini.Amith

A reasonable topic for a write-up in theoretical physics
Thank you. Believe me, I am quite excited about doing research. As of now, my most favorite subject is Quantum physics and I would really like to probe in deeper into QM. So far I am good with QM formalism, dirac notation, basic 1d potentials, 3d potentials and solutions to SE, hydrogen atom...- kini.Amith

A reasonable topic for a write-up in theoretical physics
Sir, I did not mean to imply from my post that i am asking someone from the internet to do the write-up for me. That is why i carefully chose the words: I am not asking you to give me my research topic. I am asking you to give advice on how to get started, when looking for relevant research...- kini.Amith

A reasonable topic for a write-up in theoretical physics
I was recently shortlisted for interview ( for integrated Ph.D. in Theoretical physics) at a research university in India. As a part of the admission procedure I am supposed to give "A write-up of 200-250 words describing your interest in your most preferred field of study. The write-up should...- kini.Amith

Graduate Separation of variables to solve Schrodinger equation
OK. I meant rectangular potential well. Sorry about that. I agree that you cannot always separate out variables. Sometimes you can. For a rectangular well, we can if we assume the wave function, like i said in the original post, to be product of 3 functions. I meant that in cases where we CAN...- kini.Amith
