Why isn't length contraction permanent even though time dilation is?
This topic is driving me crazy. I have read every thread dealing with the OPs question and have not found a satisfactory answer. bcrowell had an interesting point, but needs further expansion. John goes off on a rocket while Jill stays on earth. When John returns, he has aged less due the...- luxor99

Understanding Spin and Quantum States: Insights from 'The Theoretical Minimum
In thinking of the Stern Gerlach experiment, I understand how the magnets can be aligned along the z-axis, and along the y-axis (assuming y-axis is perpendicular to propagation)..but how do you orient the magnets in the x-direction (along the propagation) to measure spin x? Wouldn't that block...- luxor99

Experimental Quantum Mechanics Texts?
Beck's book is the one to get. He starts with polarization (with detailed experiments that can be done in the lab) as a gentle 2D vector introduction to QM. Most other texts start with spin (which is abstract unless you're familiar with Stern-Gerlach experiment), bore you with the formalism...- luxor99

What Are the Best Lasers for Optics Experiments?
I'm looking for a good laser for optic experiments. All the professional papers I've read show the use of a 351nm Argon Ion laser. A new 30 mW one of these is about $6,000, but I see used ones pop up on Ebay from time to to time. My question is, is there a difference between this laser used...- luxor99

Equipment for Quantum eraser experiment
Does anyone know the full specs for those pump argon lasers used in the quantum eraser experiments? We're can I buy a used one? Also, is there a good place to buy the other equipment (lenses, crystals, etc) needed to perform the experiment? thanks! Lux- luxor99
