Solid State Physics - Modes of Oscillation of Atom
Homework Statement [/B] My question is more about the math of the problem. For equation 22.97, how do I construct a 3x3 matrix from a 12 element series? After constructing the matrix should I set the determinant equal to 0 where I will find the determinant has 3 solutions (2 being...- MightyDogg

Why does Hooke's law not work here?
Homework Statement A 1200-kg car moving on a horizontal surface has speed v = 85 kmh when it strikes a horizontal coiled spring and is brought to rest in a distance of 2.2 m. What is the spring stiffness constant of the spring? Homework Equations F=-kx KE=(1/2)mv^2 PE(spring)=(1/2)kx^2...- MightyDogg

Two objects acceleration problem
I forgot to mention when I put 16.5m into the last equation I made it negative because it was going downward, thus my acceleration turned out negative. As long as the magnitude is correct then I'm ok with the problem. Thank you for double checking my work.- MightyDogg

Physics Major applying for EE internships
Hello all, I am a senior physics major currently in the process of applying into an EE masters program. I'd like to get an EE related internship next summer to get some work experience. How should I go about this? There is a career fair at my school sometime this fall. When I approach potential...- MightyDogg

Go from Physics to Engineering: Graduate School Options
My plan is to do electrical engineering so I am glad to read that. Is there a low acceptance rate into such graduate programs if I only have a physics degree and not an EE one? Edit: Also, how does one take remedial classes? Can I take them as a graduate student? Or do I need to take them as an...- MightyDogg

Thinking of switching from Chemistry to Physics
I am a 20 year old Chemistry major who is currently finishing up his junior year of college. My initial plan was to graduate with a Chemistry BA and then proceed to apply to medical school. However, after taking physics non-calc based 1 & 2 I remembered how much I enjoy the physics. I am...- MightyDogg

Solve RC Circuit Question: Time Constant & Current
Wait... I think I have an error in my knowledge of what is fundamentally going on... I was comparing the resistance between 50 and 100. From your reply I am assuming that once the switch closes there can be a current flowing through that loop, so you only need the R for the loop with the least...- MightyDogg

Solve RC Circuit Question: Time Constant & Current
Since I do not have any notes on this subject I researched a bit online. From my understanding of what I read, short circuits are circuits that disregard a certain path because the current would rather go along the more unimpeded pathway? However, in this case, why wouldn't the current rather go...- MightyDogg

Solve RC Circuit Question: Time Constant & Current
Homework Statement Switch S has been open for a long time. It is then suddenly closed. Determine the time constant (a) before the switch is closed and (b) after the switch is closed. (c) Let the switch be closed at t=0. Determine the current in the switch as a function of time. Homework...- MightyDogg
