Get an Internship with Physics Major at U of I Urbana
Is it a theoretical internship? I'd guess that they're looking for grades more than anything else. From my experience, that's the main factor.- motoroller

MSc Physics: Struggling With Difficult Project
I'm doing my MSc Physics project right now (I've already done a 4-year undergraduate course), and I'm finding the going very tough. My exam results were fine (I got a good percentage), but my project is due in a month and I'm finding it extremely difficult. I think part of the reason is...- motoroller

Quickest way of plotting scientific histograms
I've tried a few methods of plotting histograms from unsorted data, but they're all extremely involved (ROOT) or look very "childish" (online tools). What's the easiest way of plotting a histogram from a unicode text file with numbers in it? Thanks in advance - need the histograms for some...- motoroller

Graduate Compton Cross Section: Derivation & Relation
What's the relation for the Compton cross section? I remember it going as 1/(1-cos(theta)) but can't remember the rest. I searched for a derivation but can't find one at the moment.- motoroller

Graduate Invariance of spacetime interval
My LaTeX isn't so good, but substituting: x'=\gamma(x+vt) t'=\gamma(t+\frac{vx}{c^2}) into (x')^2+(y')^2+(z')^2-c^2(t')^2 trying to get x^2+y^2+z^2-c^2t^2 i.e. invariant interval- motoroller

Graduate Opposite beams of photons or electrons
With two electrons emitted from a decaying atom in opposite directions, the speed can easily be greater than the speed of light between the two electrons (e.g. 0.7c in each direction). If two receivers then pick up the electrons, hasn't the information traveled between the two receivers at a...- motoroller

Graduate Invariance of spacetime interval
I've tried proving the invariance of the spacetime interval from Lorentz transformations 3 times now, but every time I end up with two extra terms that don't cancel! Could I have some help?- motoroller

Graduate What Causes 2n^2 Vacancies in Atomic Orbitals?
Having a mental block, I should know the answer but can't remember! Why are there 2n^2 vacancies for each value of n in an atom? The factor of two is due to degeneracy in s, and one factor of n comes from angular orbitals, 0<=L<=(n-1), which gives n states (2L+1=n), but where does the...- motoroller
