I currently have a dilemma. I currently do structural FEA analysis (mechanics/vibrations) in the gas turbine industry. This has mainly been my specialty as I have had little experience in other areas of gas turbines. However, I have always been fascinated on a personal level with the...
I want to basically have a dedicated machine for running scientific computation programs and be able to access it remotely anywhere using a laptop/netbook. That means I don’t care much about GUIs. I’m used to using Unix and am perfectly fine with doing everything through a command window. At the...
I am currently a junior year mechanical engineering major. I have always been interested in programming and throughout the years read books on C and Java. I recently started focusing on MATLAB. We've always had to use it in some of our classes, but I never really dedicated myself to learning...
You should ask students in the graduate department what their impressions were of the professor. Most importantly your research should be based on what you want to pursue rather than the professors personality. It's kind of depressing to work with a professor you don't like being around but it's...
Reiterating what everyone else said, college is not a race. What matters most when applying to grad school is your GPA, not the number of credits you took. When I first came to college I was in such a rush to finish early that I took more courses than I could handle and my GPA suffered as a...
Although memorization of formulas is very helpful in physics, when you get to upper level physics courses it will actually become an obstacle. Upper level physics courses require you to derive formulas rather than memorize them. At my university for example the elementary physics courses are a...
I recently installed ubuntu netbook remix on my newly bought netbook to try it out. I created a new partition on my HDD from the free disk space to install ubuntu on. So right now I have dual boot ubuntu and windows xp. The ubuntu netbook remix turned out to be more buggy than I thought and I'm...
This is not so much a problem as it is a conceptual question. You're calculating the moment of inertia of a composite shape, let's say a square and a triangle. The square however has a hole inside of it. How does this change the computation of the moment of inertia? This is in a 2-D plane.
My...
My robotic team and I are constructing an underwater autonomous vehicle. We are trying to do as much of the design process in Pro-E as possible to make life easier for us down the road. One aspect of testing which would be made much easier is buoyancy testing. Therefore, I was wondering if it...
My robotics group competes every year in a competition. We build an autonomous underwater vehicle that can self-navigate its way through a course, it has many sensors on it and the wiring gets really complicated... we want to get all the details on Pro-E this year because the previous year we...
My robotics group and I are currently in the process of engineering an autonomous underwater vehicle. We have designed most of the parts in Pro-E however we still need to design the cables and wires as well as design how they will be managed. Does anyone know if Pro-E can be used for cable/wire...
wencke530,
If you're an undergrad in EE all you really need is a TI83. That's what most classes recommend. Alot of courses engineering related, at least at my school, don't allow you to use calculators on exams. And I know many people who used TI89's to do the calculations for their homework...
It's an hpdv8000, it has 2 GB ram, an intel centrino duo processor and nvidia 7600 graphics card. The thing is, whenever it starts overheating I'll notice the graphics on the computer start to slug but everything else still runs fine. Could it be that just the graphics card is overheating? Maybe...
The laptop will sometimes have cold air coming out and still say it's overheating. Your answer makes a lot of sense though, since the issue didn't happen until I had my new fan installed. It could be possible that one of the temp sensor wires got crushed.
