Graduate Measurement and error (error estimation and propagation)
Thank you mfb for the reply, I see that I wrote the formula for 1/q instead of q, so that would give you the value b=2 instead. I'll have a look at the paper and see if I can get a grip of it. Of course the ##\sqrt{n}## only works that far, and that my uncertainty doesn't go to zero as my counts...- otg

Graduate Measurement and error (error estimation and propagation)
Description of the situation I have measured the incident number of electrons in a channel electron multiplier at different light polarization angles (a photoelectron angular distribution measurement). The events follow a poisson distribution and as far as I know the number of electron counts in...- otg

SR400 photon counter readout in labview
Thank you for your reply, I found out that it is not possible to do what I first wanted so I simply did it in another way. The drivers also don't seem to be free of problems, but that on the other hand gives me a reason to learn GPIB... :)- otg

SR400 photon counter readout in labview
I'm trying to get the hang of labview and it's going pretty well so far. My plan is to control a SR400 photon counter and I seem to get it to do stuff on my commands even though there's no manual for the drivers. (does anyone have one? :) ) My problem/question: I can get the counts for each...- otg

Graduate Channeltron contamination/cleaning
Cleaning of the chamber has of course been done since the oil was discovered, and I'm about to test the channeltrons (from Dr Sjuts) in a clean environment but I guess you're right that it's best to consult the manufacturer about the cleaning process of the detectors if they turn out to be...- otg

Graduate Channeltron contamination/cleaning
I have some channeltrons placed in a close-to-UHV environment (~10^-8 torr) where I suspect contamination. The chamber in which the channeltrons are placed was previously part of an oil contamination accident but has been cleaned. However the channeltrons were placed inside the chamber after...- otg

Impact parameter dependence of classical scattering angle
ha ha ok my fingers must've gone into LaTeX mode :) To reply on my own post then, no there is no simple way, I think I interpreted the question "solve for r as function of b" as "find an expression" but the task was as simple as plot the roots to find the functional behavior. Thanx for...- otg

Impact parameter dependence of classical scattering angle
Homework Statement The problem is to get the classical turning point as a function of the impact parameter b for the Lennard-Jones potential. Homework Equations The Lennard-Jones potential is given as [itex]V(r)=4\epsilon[(\frac{\sigma}{r})^{12}-(\frac{\sigma}{r})^6][\itex]. The effective...- otg

Graduate Twin Paradox- a quick(ish) question
Ah this was what I needed to hear :) I think all I really needed was for someone to tell me [again]. Been quite busy lately and my mind is not really following so this struck me as really annoying since I had long accepted the twin paradox and all of relativity, especially the mathematical...- otg

Graduate Twin Paradox- a quick(ish) question
Correct No, it is the same events from the perspective of "A" [who I named "B" in the previous pic]. In your words: In the lower part of the diagram, you have "A" being the spaceship, at rest. "B" travels outbound from spaceship, [that is, Earth moves away from "A" in "A":s perspective] and...- otg

Graduate Twin Paradox- a quick(ish) question
I get a feeling that my original question, which I think was quite straightforward, got lost somewhere in all the lengthy discussions about Klingons... I have no issue with simultaneity being relative, and no problem accepting that different frames give different results, nor the relativity...- otg

Graduate Twin Paradox- a quick(ish) question
Still haven't read the reply thoroughly, just wanted to make clear that I did not speak of two klingons to both of which I sync my watch. I simply [think that I] had the situation described in two different ways. Either I see it as person being at rest in the spaceship frame in the...- otg

Graduate Twin Paradox- a quick(ish) question
Ah, but I didn't presume this. I never said that the Klingon passing the Earth would be in the same frame as me on the earth. This was only a result of the previous claim that the earth-at-rest-frame-point-of-view is different from the spaceship-at-rest-frame-point-of-view. I summarized the...- otg

Graduate Twin Paradox- a quick(ish) question
Yes, but I never mentioned any distant klingon. So far it seems that we have concluded two apparently identical situations which are different: 1. Spaceship-klingon moving in the opposite direction from me with whom I sync my watch in the frame where I move away from the Earth should see the...- otg
