Do Maths Journals not seriously consider papers by engineering students?
There has been a lot written about the Fibonacci numbers already, and odds are that you aren't thinking of anything that hasn't already been written. I'd suggest doing some research to find out if what you're thinking has already been done.- QuantumCurt

Do Maths Journals not seriously consider papers by engineering students?
From what I'm gathering, OP is approaching a math professor with a question from pure mathematics that's not necessarily related to the subject matter of the course. The professor seems to be suggesting that pursuing these questions from the standpoint of pure mathematics is fruitless, and that...- QuantumCurt

Courses Which Course is Right for Me: Math 25 or 55 at Harvard?
This is where the distinction between formal prerequisites and real prerequisites is important. One could conceivably take any of these classes without having any prior knowledge of multivariable calculus. However, one would have to be a very gifted student. Math 55 especially is an infamously...- QuantumCurt

Velocity and position from forces with mixed dependences
I actually realized my mistake shortly after posting this. It was indeed what you're referring to. I managed to get it figured out though. Thank you!- QuantumCurt

Velocity and position from forces with mixed dependences
Homework Statement This is for a junior level classical mechanics course. We're currently working with Newton's Laws. A particle of mass m moves under the influence of a force ##\vec{F}(t,v)=-ktv \hat{v}##, where k is a positive constant. At time t=0, ##v=v_0 \hat{x}## at the origin, where...- QuantumCurt

Going to the best ranked uni no longer makes sense?
This is all very true. Obviously schools like MIT, Stanford, and the like are very selective, so most of the people there are well qualified to be there. But there are obviously still exceptions to this. Some people squeeze through the cracks, so to speak. For a student that's kind of on the...- QuantumCurt

Is Taking a Semester Off from Math a Good Idea for Prospective Math Majors?
I always advise people not to take a class like calculus in the summer. One can certainly do well in it during the summer, but by necessity it's going to be much faster paced. There's considerably less time to devote to deriving equations and proving concepts. Certain methods will be glossed...- QuantumCurt

Apparent vs. actual speed for moving star
I didn't really get the impression that it was missing any information. I think they're just looking for a symbolic solution here.- QuantumCurt

Apparent vs. actual speed for moving star
This is for a classed called Special Relativity and Math Methods. This problem doesn't involve special relativity though, since it's all from the same frame of reference. 1. Homework Statement Every 2 years, more or less, The New York Times publishes an article in which some astronomer claims...- QuantumCurt

Programs How hard is it to get a physics degree?
I'm a physics/math double major, and my workload can be heavy at times. It's not so heavy that I don't have a social life though. I have good time management skills, and I manage to get my work done while still having time for a social life, hanging out with friends, participating in student...- QuantumCurt

Schools Will grad schools see what I take senior spring?
Depending on when application due dates fall, you'll typically have already registered for your spring courses when you submit the applications. This should be indicated on your transcript. You'll typically send an updated transcript after fall grades have been posted, and your spring classes...- QuantumCurt

Abstract Algebra self study question -- Are Calc I, II, III prerequisites?
As already mentioned, it's not really a conceptual prerequisite, but it typically is a formal prerequisite. This means essentially that although the material may not depend on knowledge of calculus, it does assume that one has developed some mathematical maturity while completing the calculus...- QuantumCurt

		Take Partial Differential Equations? Senior
I see. When I took calculus 3 it covered the fundamental theorems of vector calculus. Different schools structure it differently though.- QuantumCurt

What undergrad math courses are traditionally more proof intensive?
I'm currently in a course that revolves around proofs. It's called Fundamental Mathematics and it basically serves as an introduction to advanced math and specifically to writing proofs in advanced math. It should really be a cool class I think. Topics include mathematical objects like rings...- QuantumCurt

		Take Partial Differential Equations? Senior
I find it hard to believe that anyone would even have the option of taking PDEs without having taken vector calculus. There's a drastic difference in difficulty between the two. Did you cover any vector calculus in your calculus sequence?- QuantumCurt
