Undergrad Calculating Velocity at any given point in an orbit
I was going for in only for terms of x, to disclude y Is it valid how you subsituted the original x and y, but not the differentiated ones?- relativitydude

Undergrad Calculating Velocity at any given point in an orbit
Hello, I'm trying to really understand orbits. I want to be able to calculate the velocity at any given point in an orbit. Now, parametrically an ellipse can be: x = a*cos(t) y = b*sin(t) If those are position, can I take the derivative to obtain velocity? x' = -a*sin(t) y' =...- relativitydude

Impossible vector problem. Help
Thanks for all the help. I guess not having an overall angle made the problem, well, impossible. Including it brought me quickly to the answer.- relativitydude

Impossible vector problem. Help
Yes, using the horizontal and vertical components would be really easy but I only know the overall magnitude :(- relativitydude

Impossible vector problem. Help
Overall Magnitude = sqrt( (mag1*cos(A) + mag2*cos(B) + mag3*cos(C))^2 + (mag1*sin(A) + mag2*sin(B) + mag3*sin(C))^2) I don't think it's that easy since the angle and magnitude go hand in hand. I need to solve for both mag1 and angle A. I'm sorry if I forgot to really point that out. I...- relativitydude

Impossible vector problem. Help
Most of the time, one uses vectors to find an overall magnitude acting on something, but I need to go in reverse. Say I know there are a slew of charges and the center one feels a force of some magnitude and there is one undefined vector (magnitude and angle unknown) I would think if you know...- relativitydude

Looking for a syllabus for Tiplers Modern Physics
I have found some syllabi but they only give assigned problems. I am having a hard time doing a self-study. It's hard to remain on task with no guidance and so much material. Any suggestions from those who do this often?- relativitydude

Michelson experiment question/modern physics
I don't know how to proceed on this question. It says: A shift of one fringe in the michelson-morley experiment would result from a difference of one wavelength or a change of one period of vibration in the round trip travel of light when the inferometer is rotated 90º What speed would...- relativitydude

Looking for a syllabus for Tiplers Modern Physics
I'm going to be self-studying Tipler's modern physics over the summer. I just got the third edition for $7.71 off eBay and it's in pristine condition :) I am trying to find a detailed syllabus instead of me reading every page and doing every problem.- relativitydude

Undergrad Tricky Trig Identity: Solving sin(3x)cos(x)=sin(x)cos(x)(3-sin^2(x))
This is a tricky one, sin(3x)cos(x)=sin(x)cos(x)(3-sin^2(x)) I have tried addition formulas and expanding sin(3x) into something else, any help?- relativitydude

Where to take Introductory Modern Physics online?
Where to take "Introductory Modern Physics" online? I missed taking "introductory modern physics" this semester and need it for my junior classes. Does anyone know of an institution that has an online class for it? Or I would even study it independently and take a test on it. Help!- relativitydude
