What is the rotational velocity of hard disk actuator arm?
0 down vote favorite There is a lot of material discussing the rotational speed of the magnetic disk in HDD but not about the rotational speed of actuator arm. What are the typical actuation speeds of the actuator in HDD? This information will be used in the design of a fast shutter system...- rkatcosmos

Graduate Using multiple mirrors in Michelson Interferometer
Thanks for this info. I was not aware of this. Is there a way to estimate the coherance length, in case my laser manufacturer does not specify this detail in the specification?- rkatcosmos

Graduate Using multiple mirrors in Michelson Interferometer
The number of mirrors typically used in Michelson Interferometer is 2. I am looking up the respective Wikipedia article and MIT's youtube video. I am wondering, for the sake of one of my experiment, whether more than 2 mirrors can be used in the interferometer? I require the traversing mirror...- rkatcosmos

Undergrad Law for heat exchange and evaporation
If particles with KE greater greater than "critical KE" escapes, then how do they absorb energy? Why should they absorb energy? They are already having higher energy... And can temperature be defined to any defined region? If so what will be the definition of temperature? If average KE of...- rkatcosmos

Undergrad Law for heat exchange and evaporation
I was asking about evaporation and not radiation. And in both cases I don't think its a chemical process- rkatcosmos

Undergrad Law for heat exchange and evaporation
I wonder if there is any law for heat exchange. I have learned that heat exchange between systems occurs when the temperature of respective systems differ. But in case of evaporation, the process creates a cooling effect even in an isothermal condition ( I mean by isothermal condition to be a...- rkatcosmos

What's the meaning of strength?
I am coming across definitions which says certain substances (like martensite) are hard but brittle. I can't understand the meaning. Brittle substances have yield strength closer to breaking strength. If something breaks/fails easily then how can it be hard..? Pls help me out with some numbers...- rkatcosmos

High School Why Does Sound Not Generate When Metal Ball Rolls on Cloth?
When a metal ball rolls on a metal surface, we can hear some noise. But when the metal ball rolls on a cloth, we cannot hear anything. Why is that? This question has bothered me a lot...- rkatcosmos
