EM Radiation oscillating charged mass
Hello Spinnor, Thanks for your excellent response, I've almost figured it out. From the picture I see that: dR2 = 2(h2 + R2) + dR2 + 2RdR - 2 sqrt(h2 +R2) sqrt( h2 + (R+dR)2) cos( d(theta) ) I decided that this was a mess but we could probably simplify it to where (R+dR)2 ~= R2 so I...- roeb

EM Radiation oscillating charged mass
Homework Statement A particle of mass m and charge q is attached to a spring with force constant k, hanging from the ceiling. Its equilibrium position is a distance h above the floor. It is pulled down a distance d below equilibrium and released, at time t = 0; Under the usual assumptions...- roeb

Is Taking Quantum Mechanics Pass/Fail a Bad Idea for My Transcript?
I'd like to take quantum mechanics pass fail and I'm curious if this actually has the possibility of looking bad on my transcripts -- I'm an engineer so I don't need to take QM and this semester my course load + everything else going on may be a little too much for me to do well in this...- roeb

Modeling Input Impedance of MESFET Using Series RLC Circuit
Hi, thanks for your reply. I understand how to match a single frequency, but I'm having trouble getting a 'good' match for the range of frequencies. What I want is a single RLC network that can approximate the reflection coefficients over 6-10 GHz...- roeb

Modeling Input Impedance of MESFET Using Series RLC Circuit
Hi, I'm trying to model the input impedance of a MESFET by using a series RLC circuit. For example I have the following reflection coefficients: .575 angle(-138) at 6 GHz .617 angle(170) at 8 GHz .610 angle(128) at 10 GHz As you can see, as the frequency changes so too does the angle. Does...- roeb

Probability of a Gin Hand with Cards from Two Suits
Homework Statement A gin hand consists of 10 cards from a deck of 48 cards (4 Ace Cards are missing). Find the probability that a gin hand has all 10 cards from two suits. Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution So my thinking would be since we have 12 cards per suit...- roeb

Pulsing a 2W Laser Diode w/ 26 AWG Wire - Is Gauge Okay?
Hey, I guess I'm not using that stuff because I'm kind of short on supplies. So the length of wire itself is less than 10 cm. I'm just soldering a BNC connector to a veroboard and using the AWG 26 wire to connect to diode. The signal pin of the BNC connector itself doesn't look all that...- roeb

Pulsing a 2W Laser Diode w/ 26 AWG Wire - Is Gauge Okay?
I am going to be pulsing a laser diode at around 2 Watt (room temperature) with a frequency of around 1-10 MHz. Right now I'm planning on using 26 AWG wire. Anyone have any thoughts on whether this is okay? Is the gauge okay? Since it's pulsed I assume I don't have to worry as much about heat...- roeb

Finding the Distribution of Minimum Random Variables in Uniform Distribution?
Homework Statement Let X1, X2, ... Xn be n mutually independent random variables each of which is uniformly distributed on the integers from 1 to k. Let Y denote the minimum of the Xi's. Find the distribution of Y. Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution I can see that P(Xi = j) = 1/K...- roeb

I've used breadboards for 170 V with currents in the hundreds of microamps. But you should definitely use caution if you decide to try it.- roeb

Inductance of a Trace: Qualitative Analysis
If I have a trace on a PCB that is wider on the left side and then tapers down to a narrower trace on the right side, why is it that the inductance is greater on the narrower side? I realize there are equations that describe this behavior but I'm just trying to get a qualitative understanding of...- roeb

Usefulness of an RF Circuit Design Class
I'm considering taking an RF circuit design class that would focus heavily on transmission lines and microwave circuits. It's supposed to be a tough class but I think I would enjoy it because I really like E&M. The problem is that if I take this class I won't be able to take a photonics class...- roeb

Is c1 + c2 x^.5 a Solution of y y'' + (y')^.5 = 0?
Does it matter if it's not linear in general? Boyce/Diprima's theorems don't seem to make note of whether or not the ODE must be linear for a set of fundamental solutions to be valid.- roeb
