This happens to most people in math or physics at some point. There will always be stellar students out there but most of us go through this. I got a C in calc 2 and now I have a math degree. Depending on your school sometimes calc 2 is a 'weed out' course where they really are trying to put...
I would talk to other people in math at your school. In a lot of places (but not all), analysis is kind of like a hoop to jump through so they can weed out weaker students. It's not necessarily linked to other courses you will take. But it's going to depend a lot on what your program is like. In...
Yes, you can. A few things to keep in mind (my background is experimental stuff, this might not apply if you're looking to do pure math or whatever):
- Ask around a lot. Expect no reply or a "sorry, not interested" from most profs. But keep asking.
- You are more likely to be taken in if you...
Hey, before you read this over I'll mention that I've checked the general solution and it works. So if you don't feel like following my steps to get the general solution just jump down to the end of my attempt, because the real problem for me is figuring out what to do with the side conditions...
Hey guys,
I did a joint major (physiology/math), which is like a major and a half and therefore not as in-depth as a full major in either subject, with a minor in CS. I'm wrapping up this term and I was hoping to see what working is like before strapping in for a PhD or something in...
2 things:
1) I looked at this intuitively and just thought "well, why not just guess Ax^6 because I'll just have 3 things multiplied by x^6 on the LHS afterward"? And it worked out. It makes perfect sense.
2) To hunt_mat: now that I read your post, is this what you're getting at?
Homework Statement
Solve the IVP
(x^2)y'' + 4xy' - 40y = x^6
for y(1) = 10, y'(1) = 1Homework Equations
not so much "equations" but here I try to use variation of parameters to get the particular solution. The Attempt at a Solution
FOR THE HOMOGENEOUS SOLUTION:
using the substitution y = x^r...
Homework Statement
Find the integral of
1/(xe^x)
Homework Equations
None really... integration by parts maybe: integral of udv = vu - integral of vdu
The Attempt at a Solution
I tried this by parts but didn't really get anywhere, it definitely doesn't simplify into anything...
Hi observer20,
Unfortunately I can't say I know enough about QC at Waterloo vs. McGill. All I can really say is that I'm aware of the ICQ going up at Waterloo, I believe there's also work done at the Perimeter Institute in that area (but I'm not 100% sure on that!), and distinct from those...
Hey,
I see that you aren't interested in keeping the thread around anymore, but in case you still want feedback I'm originally from Waterloo, I'm at McGill, and I've taken a bunch of math here:
- Math profs here are almost exclusively into pure math. There are some more applied ones but...
Discrete math -- links to biology?
Hey,
I'm in a math and biology program in college and I've recently become more and more into the discrete side of math. I was wondering if anybody knew of any areas of research that integrate discrete mathematics and biology, as there doesn't seem to be...
