If you put a noisy motor in a vacuum is it more efficient?
I was wondering what the motor noise is assumed to be caused by in the problem statement. Worn bearings? The additional friction and vibration from that would not be helped by a vacuum environment. If the noise is the air as it's blown over the case (TEFC: "total enclosed fan cooled" type)...- scientific601

Undergrad LIGO Discovery - A question about space-time properties
So in the elongated or compressed pathways, do the subatomic particles out of which they are constructed undergo growth and shrinkage, along with their inter-particle distances? Or at least along one axis? The electron orbits become elongated? It doesn't make sense to me. If light speed is...- scientific601

Undergrad LIGO Discovery - A question about space-time properties
A very good question. I was thinking the same thing but am having trouble formulating good search keywords to possibly find relevant discussions on the internet. If gravitational waves / ripples are a temporary cyclical expansion and contraction of space observed in a relatively local region...- scientific601

How Does Weight Affect Speed of a Soap Box Car?
Overall weight or weight distribution about its center of mass shouldn't matter directly. However, if there is non symmetrical friction between front vs. back wheels on the ground (wether poor bearings, rubber deflection), then these may vary with the weight applied at their specific locations...- scientific601

Minimum and maximum number of bits required....
That second example 000100000 is not an example of the minimum encoding and therefore can not be converted binary<->decimal in the usual way. It's a less efficient way of representing 10 quantities. Here there can only be one bit on at a time. To convert such data to base 10 you have look at...- scientific601

How to draw longitudinal lines on a circle as Earth?
Project a line from the center of the circle straight down. This is 0 degrees. Rotate this line left or right 15 degrees, place a vertical line where it intersects the circle. Where this vertical line intersects the equator is where the longitude is. Repeat for 30, 60 degrees. If you want to...- scientific601

Is diversification a sham? (financial advice)
Thanks for that eloquent explanation. I'll have to digest that. It appears that the counterexamples I gave are faulty because they exhibit an expected payoff that's less than zero. You're saying that only potentially positive payoff items may be skewed by narrowing its spread. I'm still not...- scientific601

Is diversification a sham? (financial advice)
Is diversification a sham? Yet this is the advice financial advisors are constantly giving us. I can't stop thinking that it's all marketing hoax... giving people the false hope that there exists a real "strategy" and logic to anything. To me it's equivalent to proclaiming that sticking to one...- scientific601

Stargazing Got my First Telescope | Celestron Sky Prodigy 130 | Astrophotography
The angle is due to the relative position of the eyepiece on the tube. If the tube can be rotated such that the eyepiece is at the very top then the image would be 0 degrees (but still inverted). A bit awkard to look through and you may need a step to stand on. Or rotate it 90 degrees such that...- scientific601

Is this Computer Science or Computer Engineering?
Looks like a combination of both Computer Science and Computer Engineering. Traditionally Computer Science is software oriented. Apart from introductory logic, number bases, circuits & gates, it mainly deals with algorithms, data structures, language (low level, high level), compiler design...- scientific601

High School How can i calculate the resistance of this electromagnet?
Current is listed as 0.42A in the specs. So you could also divide voltage by current (simple ohms law). Same result.- scientific601

Rational and irrational numbers
In that case I'm afraid even Newton's iterative method would become too laborious. I suppose using long-hand square root calculation, combined with its squaring to double check deviation is the only alternative.- scientific601
