Vibration of a mass connected via preloaded spring
Thanks very much. From your link, I see that it is a base excitation case. Greatly appreciate you leading me in the right direction.- sfensphan

Vibration of a mass connected via preloaded spring
The setup: I have a mass (m1)connected to a much, much larger mass (m2) via a preloaded spring. They start out in contact because the preloaded spring holds them together. Now suppose the large mass is subject to vibrations, possibly at the resonance of the structure. Will the two masses...- sfensphan

Motors in series: how do you stop one motor from spinning?
Thanks dschlink. appreciate your thoughts. I should've clarified that the drivetrain setup is when the electric motor stator is attached to the ICE's output shaft. The electric motor's rotor is attached to the wheel. I think i understand the case where the electric motor adds power by a gear. I...- sfensphan

Motors in series: how do you stop one motor from spinning?
Thanks Simon for taking a look. For your first question, I would expect the switched off motor to rotate (stator rotating with respect to the rotor), sort of acting like a bearing, with no work being done on the wheel itself. With the rotor and stator moving, it is acting like a generator. To...- sfensphan

Motors in series: how do you stop one motor from spinning?
Hi All, I've been reading up on hybrid vehicles and how the Honda Insight has an electric motor attached directly to the gas engine driveshaft. Their combined output causes the wheels to spin. My question is in regards to when the electric motor is off but the gas engine is on. Why doesn't the...- sfensphan

Preferential bending loading direction of a beam
Hi All, Greatly appreciate the replies. I can see that there are a multitude of variables I hadn't consider in my hypothetical. I had a chance to look at a steel hook on a crane over the weekend and I noticed that the inner part of the was beefier than the outer (cross section of a "T"). By...- sfensphan

Preferential bending loading direction of a beam
Hi All, I'm trying to think through a problem and was hoping to ping the community for guidance. Suppose you have a beam that's symmetric about 2 axes (like a u channel or a triangular extrusion). Is it better to load the beam in compression on the side with material furthest away or should you...- sfensphan

Undergrad How much work done by a ball during an oblique collision?
Thanks for the very detailed reply! I suspected that they would be separable (if that's the right word) for the case in which the wall is rigid but just didn't know what tool to use. A followup if I could. What if the wall doesn't move but deforms? I don't think it would be as separable... -

Undergrad How much work done by a ball during an oblique collision?
Suppose I have a ball colliding with a surface at an oblique angle. I want to know what work will be done on the surface. Now, there is kinetic energy associated with the tangential and normal velocity of the ball. Can I say that the kinetic energy of the ball associated with the normal...
