Undergrad A question on towing through an angle
Hello friends, I have a situation where I am looking to pull a load and would like to better understand the forces involved. In the first scenario I am pulling a load in a straight line, the load cell reads 10kN. In the second scenario I would like to pull the same load at an angle of 150o...- tina-duncan

Undergrad How Thick Should My Thermal Barrier Be to Protect Against Heat?
Hello friends, I am having a hard time understanding thermal conduction and was hoping someone could shed some light for me. I am looking to protect a component from heat by placing a thermal barrier between it and the heat source, the heat applied to the surface of this barrier would be...- tina-duncan

Calculating stress as a result of an impact?
I'm wondering if there is a calculation that can be used to work out the maximum stress on an object upon impact. Say for example an object strikes a rigid wall, how would one go about calculating the stress on that object?- tina-duncan

A small question regarding force/stress/area
My apologies. Here is a rather crude sketch of the problem. The load acting on the hole is supplied by a pin of diameter 0.0195m. This is all the information that is given to me, so assumptions may have to be made I would imagine...- tina-duncan

A small question regarding force/stress/area
Hello friends, I have a small query regarding a force being applied to a surface... I have a force of 0.1MN which is being applied in the -y direction onto a surface. Now I know that if said surface was flat, I would divide the force by the area to give me the stress. However the force is...- tina-duncan

Amp hours pulled from a 12V battery?
Thank you for your swift response! This indeed confirms my confusion, I have a killawatt meter plugged in between my inverter and appliance. the meter gives a reading of 0.1A. Neglecting the efficiency of the inverter shouldn't my reading be 2A? (24W/12V)- tina-duncan

Amp hours pulled from a 12V battery?
Hi friends, I am having a little difficulty understanding how amp hours being pulled from a battery are calculated, any help would be much appreciated! I have a 12v 125Ah deep cycle battery. Research has told me that for DC appliances you divide their wattage by 12V to give the amps, so...- tina-duncan

Earth pin in a standard UK plug.
Thank you for your replies fellas! I will elaborate on what it is I am doing, hopefully this will clear some things up. I recently purchased an inverter which I have connected to a battery. As the inverter has a metal casing the manufacture states that it should be earthed, obviously to...- tina-duncan

Earth pin in a standard UK plug.
Hi friends, simple question here. I have a system that needs to be earthed, currently I am connecting it to an earthing rod which I have outside, however it would be more convenient for me to have the system indoors. Would wiring the Earth connection to the Earth pin in a standard UK plug...- tina-duncan

Troubleshooting a Simple Sun Tracking Device: Tips and Solutions
Hi friends! I have recently started a small project where I had hoped to build a simple sun tracker. My initial plan involved 2 Photovoltaic cells mounted at either end of a panel which was attached to a shaft which was then attached to a small DC motor. Both cells were hooked to the motor...- tina-duncan

What is the best set up for a safe solar panel system?
So I'm not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to electrical connections and the like but I tend to have a fair idea. I'm currently planning on building a solar panel with the hope that it will power appliances throughout my house. My planned set up is as follows: >> 36 0.5V 3.6A...- tina-duncan

Inverters and Power Consumtion?
Hi friends :) I was wondering... I have a 12V deep cycle battery which I have connected to a 300W 12V DC-240V AC. Now if I were to plug multiple different appliances into it at the same time would I be right in saying that, for example, if I had an appliance that consumed 100W and another...- tina-duncan
