berkeman, The dog won't let-go of the ball; I've been in that situation too, and I figured out what to do, and if you think about it a little, you might find the resolution too. What exactly do you think is motivating your dog? Is it to hold and handle the ball? Or is it to have some interaction with you and the ball? Think this through a little bit. You will almost certainly know what to do.

I have a dog that likes to have things thrown for her to catch, but she will only drop it where she is instead of bringing it back for another throw. You have to fetch the item to throw it again (often on the other side of the room).
Its not happening a lot because she is not training us well!

I had another dog that would sometimes hold the ball in her mouth and want you to play tug with it while it was in her slimy mouth.

I trained a dog to give it up by threatening no more play. Jack soon learned what "Give it up or no play" meant. He also learned what "Can't reach it" meant if he didn't bring it to me or right to my hand. If he was particularly stubborn on a certain day, I'd hold my ground and ignore him completely. It didn't take long and he'd give in. He also learned that if he was getting tired he could rest a minute while saving face and really really procrastinate giving it to me. This way he could rest.

I was pointing in that direction in post #3004. I just felt like pointing in the way I did without trying to write in more detail. Your method was more advanced than what I used at the time in my own experience with the dog at that time.

When I was a kid, I would go to a local swamp about a mile away and scoop out a bucket of sluge to take home. If I let it sit for a while, some very large (about an inch long) planarians would come to the surface!

Very cool.
This is the result of a mutation in one of an embryo's first few cells (maybe first two). Their daughter cells tend to stay together as the embryo grows, resulting in clear color patterns. This approach has been used in Drosophila to map cell movements in embryogenesis.

I had to have my 14 year old dog put down today.. That is one thing that never gets easier.
The dog was a Black Lab Blue Heeler, and just plain mutt mix . Daisy was the best companion an older person could hope for.
