Stewart died at home on Wednesday, spokesperson Kelly Bush Novak said in a statement. His death followed "a brief and poignant journey with Alzheimer's Disease and Lewy Body Dementia," Novak said.

Stewart began his acting career doing stage plays in the United Kingdom, joining the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s.

Stewart's most recognizable role began in 1987, when he started playing Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard on "Star Trek: The Next Generation." The show ran for seven seasons and also spawned four "Star Trek" films featuring Stewart as Picard and the rest of the "Next Generation" cast. Stewart later reprised the role for Paramount+ series "Star Trek: Picard," which ran for three seasons.

Fellow "Star Trek" legend William Shatner posted: "Sir Patrick Stewart was a friend, a colleague, and a magnificent actor. From the stage to the bridge of the Enterprise, he brought intelligence, grace, and a deep sense of humanity to everything he did. Captain Picard stood for the best of us, and so did the man who played him. I was filled with affection and admiration for him and his work."

George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in the original "Star Trek" series, said on Threads that "Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain."

Make it so!

I find it amazing that he could replace his heavy regional Yorkshire accent with a slightly French-sounding actor's voice. I guess that is standard fare for great actors, but it's still amazing to me.

I saw him on stage twice. Once as Vladimir, in Waiting for Godot, alongside Ian McKellen, Simon Callow (the best Pozzo I've ever seen) and Ronald Pickup (Lucky). To be honest, I thought he was a bit miscast as a tramp! They played it a bit too much like Laurel and Hardy, until Lucky's speech crushed the audience!

That said, I always remember him as Sejanus, in the BBC's 1976 production of I Claudius.

He also starred in the BBC series I, Claudius, in the 1970s, playing Sejanus, head of the Praetorian Guard, who gets sacked and killed after falling out of Emperor Tiberius's favor. Tiberius was afraid that he had gained too much power and influence.I think a young Caligula suggests to his uncle that Sejanus is a problem, and to fix the problem, you must find a dog who'll eat a dog.

---

One of his best-known appearances was in the ST Next Gen episode Inner Light, where a passing probe zaps him, rendering him unconscious. The crew tries to reawaken him for over 20 minutes while he lives a separate lifetime on a dying planet, experiencing love, marriage, and the extinction of a whole civilization unable to escape the impending doom of an exploding sun.

.. although he lacked somewhat in the fist fighting department.

That is a good poster to honor the two actor's lives that have passed away. Found out a day later that Patrick Stewart passed away by pure coincidence when searching for when the actor for Vic Fontaine from Star Trek: DS9 passed (James Darren). We have lost a lot of Trek actors in the 2020s, it is sad.

May Patrick Stewart, and all the Trek crew before him, live long and prosper. 🖖
