SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the application of the Aufbau principle and Hund's Rule in explaining electron filling in atomic subshells after electron capture. Participants express skepticism about the possibility of a 2s electron filling a vacancy in the 1s subshell, attributing this to quantum number constraints. The conversation emphasizes the importance of understanding subshells and orbitals in the context of electron configuration. A definitive conclusion regarding the filling process remains elusive, highlighting the complexity of quantum mechanics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Aufbau principle
  • Familiarity with Hund's Rule of maximum multiplicity
  • Knowledge of quantum numbers and their significance
  • Basic concepts of atomic subshells and orbitals
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the implications of the Aufbau principle on electron configuration
  • Study Hund's Rule in detail and its applications in electron filling
  • Explore quantum numbers and their role in determining electron placement
  • Investigate the effects of electron capture on atomic structure
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, educators, and anyone interested in atomic theory and electron configuration principles.

Is it possible that an electron of the 2s orbit fills the gap in 1s after electron capture?

i believe no and it has something to do with the quantum-numbers but i can't find a conclusive explanation. or maybe i am totally wrong.

Hint : What does Aufbau principle and Hund's Rule of maximum multiplicity state ? And please use the words- subshells and orbitals instead of orbits !

Edit: Need to be moved to chemistry section..
