A Binary Operator Symbol Identification.

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the identification of the binary operator symbol known as "a Little X in a Circle," which represents the Pythagorean addition defined as "a ⊕ b = sqrt(a^2 + b^2)." This symbol is specifically designed to differentiate it from the standard addition symbol (+). The LaTeX code for this operator is \oplus, which is also used in vector spaces to denote the direct sum, although this usage is unrelated to the Pythagorean context.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of binary operations
  • Familiarity with LaTeX typesetting
  • Basic knowledge of Pythagorean theorem
  • Concept of vector spaces in mathematics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the properties of binary operations in mathematics
  • Learn how to use LaTeX for mathematical notation
  • Explore the applications of Pythagorean addition in geometry
  • Investigate the concept of direct sums in vector spaces
USEFUL FOR

Mathematicians, educators, students studying advanced mathematics, and anyone interested in mathematical notation and operations.

I am curious what the wikipedia page <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagorean_addition> is referring to when it qoutes that symbol " a Little X in a Circle ", It says and I qoute the binary operation a "that symbol" b = sqrt(a^2 + b^2), Pythagoreans Hypotenuse. Much abliged.

It's just a symbol to denote that particular addition. They draw a circle around it so you wouldn't confuse it with the regular +
The LaTeX code is \oplus if you want to know. Also, the \oplus is more commonly used in vector spaces to denote the direct sum, which is a totally unrelated use.
