SUMMARY

Acetanilide demonstrates varying solubility in different solvents. It is confirmed to be soluble in diethyl ether, while its solubility in petroleum ether is characterized as very sparingly soluble. The discussion highlights that the solubility in petroleum ether may depend on the amount of sample used and the excess of solvent present during testing. Therefore, while acetanilide can dissolve in petroleum ether under certain conditions, it is not readily soluble.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of organic solvents, specifically petroleum ether and diethyl ether.
  • Basic knowledge of solubility concepts in chemistry.
  • Familiarity with experimental techniques for testing solubility.
  • Experience in handling and measuring chemical samples accurately.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the solubility properties of acetanilide in various organic solvents.
  • Learn about the differences between petroleum ether and diethyl ether in terms of chemical structure and properties.
  • Investigate methods for accurately measuring solubility in laboratory settings.
  • Explore the implications of solubility on chemical reactions and product formation.
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, laboratory technicians, and researchers involved in organic chemistry and solvent applications will benefit from this discussion.

Hey guys.

Really amateurish question but I just wanted to check something. I was doing an experiment a little while ago and from what I recall my acetanilide sample was soluble in petroleum ether but I just read somewhere that some other fellow got a result suggesting it is insoluble. So my question is is it soluble? I know it dissolved fairly happily in ether but I don't want to make any assumptions.

Petroleum ether or diethyl ether?

I know for certain that it is soluble in diethyl ether but uncertain for pet. ether.

Very sparingly soluble in pet ether.

Thanks.

When I did the test the sample was quite small and the pet ether in excess so that could explain why my sample dissolved in its entirety?

I don't think so. It's more likely that the sample was so small you lost sight of it.
