In most cases I know of, adjunct faculty hold primary posts at national or military laboratories, and they have adjunct status in order to be thesis advisers to students. Generally in these cases a full-time on-campus professor also works closely with the student to assure that certain stepping stones are being met with regards to classes, qualifying/comprehensive examinations, and other paperwork... as well as making sure progress is being made.
