In summary, Airbnb is facing serious challenges in New York City due to competition and regulatory issues. While some argue that competition is beneficial, others point out the unfairness of an unregulated market competing with a highly regulated one. The solution proposed by some is to regulate both markets or to deregulate the regulated one. However, city politics and corruption can complicate the situation, as seen in the battle between Airbnb's mayoral advisory board and mayors such as New York's Bill de Blasio. To address the issue, ten cities, including New York, have formed a joint effort to create a unified rule book for the sharing economy.

I'm all in for these types of ventures. Creates incredible competition.
But the competition is extremely unfair. You can't have a regulated market competing with an unregulated one.

I'd say something about "rent seeking", but I don't want a bad pun infraction.
