SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a Manitowoc couple who completed America's Great Loop, a challenging 6,000-mile boating journey that is considered rarer than climbing Mount Everest. The route includes significant waterways such as the Great Lakes, Mississippi River, Gulf of Mexico, Florida Keys, Atlantic Ocean, Hudson River, Lake Champlain, and St. Lawrence Seaway. Participants debated the inclusion of the Intracoastal Waterway in the journey, emphasizing its importance for safe navigation and sightseeing. The conversation highlights the unique challenges faced by trawler boats, which are designed for flat water and require favorable sea conditions for offshore travel.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of America's Great Loop route and its waterways
  • Knowledge of trawler boat characteristics and navigation
  • Familiarity with boating safety and offshore conditions
  • Awareness of the significance of the Intracoastal Waterway
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specific challenges of navigating the Great Lakes and Mississippi River
  • Learn about trawler boat design and its impact on offshore versus inshore travel
  • Explore the role of the Intracoastal Waterway in long-distance boating
  • Investigate safety protocols for offshore boating in varying sea conditions
USEFUL FOR

Boating enthusiasts, adventure travelers, and anyone interested in long-distance maritime navigation and the unique challenges of America's Great Loop.

Shouldn't you have included the Intracoastal Waterway somehow?
That would be included in the Gulf of Mexico, Florida Keys, Atlantic Ocean. I could have mentioned that they include the Intracoastal Waterway, but I don't know how much of the trip involved the IW. They might have sailed offshore for much of the time.

They probably did at every opportunity since it is a trawler. These are primarily flat water boats that roll considerably in a seaway. They would take it offshore only if sea conditions were favorable. Besides you only get to see all those interesting places if you stay inshore or in the ICW.
