Discussion Overview

The thread discusses the high cost of space travel, specifically referencing a price of $35 million for a spacewalk. Participants express various opinions on the feasibility, value, and motivations behind such expenditures, with a mix of humor and skepticism.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants question the rationale behind spending $35 million on a spacewalk, suggesting that anyone willing to do so may not be entirely sensible.
  • Others humorously propose alternative uses for the money, such as catching Osama bin Laden or sending someone else into space instead.
  • A few participants mention the potential for future price reductions in space travel, citing Richard Branson's plans for a spaceport in New Mexico.
  • There is a recurring theme of scientists not being sensible, with some arguing that the pursuit of discovery justifies the expense of space travel.
  • Several posts contain humorous remarks about the absurdity of the situation and the motivations behind such high costs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of skepticism and humor regarding the cost of space travel, with no clear consensus on whether it is worth the expense or if it reflects a lack of sensibility.

Sure, I'll call my friend Bill.

Wholly crap. Even if I had the money, I still don't think I could do it through the Russians.

Catch Osama. I am sure you would get enough money to do the spacewalk at least 10 times.

Hmmm...15 million to you to a rope and push you out into space? Nah, I don't think it's worth it.

It might be worth it to send Yomamma.

Do we really need the rope?

Have penguins been to space before? :P

Wait a few years, the price will drop. Richard Branson {Virgin} is building a space port in New Mexico. First flights out in ,'08 or '09.

And i thought you scientific types were sensible, first Ivan now SA
what is going on here, 35 mill? anyone willing to spend that much must have

Sensible :bugeye: Good gods man, we work in universities!

Scientists are NOT sensible. If we were, we would have been bussiness majors. No expense or effort is to great to tap into that great spirit of discovery. Which going into space really does well.
