The discussion centers on the feasibility and conceptual underpinnings of Holodecks in the Star Trek universe, particularly in light of recent installments. Participants debate the nature of Holodeck technology, emphasizing that it is not merely holograms but involves physical interactions with objects created through advanced technology, possibly involving force fields and photons. The conversation touches on the implications of quantum mechanics, with some arguing that anti-realism could allow for more flexible interpretations of Holodeck capabilities. However, others assert that the show's portrayal indicates Holodeck objects lack true substance, as evidenced by various episodes. Ultimately, the absence of Holodecks in newer Star Trek series is attributed to the timeline differences from the original series where they were not yet introduced.

When I watched Star Treks decades ago. I thought the Holodeck was actual matter. But then the concept is not so hard to understand. They can explain the gravity and matter are simply information.. so what the holodeck does is simply precipitate form and geometry (matter and gravity) from the informational domain (sub quantum vacuum). This would make a more imaginative Star Trek .So why didn't they propose it?
They proposed it but the joint congressional subcommittee demanded a cheaper alternative at the expense of quality. As a result of lower quality they got extra bright colors, the occasional flicker, and possible "field memory" (the spacetime equivalent of screen memory).
