How did you find PF?
google
Hi all,

Dutch artist with a life long passion for physics and cosmology.
Working on a very cool new project which involves plenty of physics, cosmology and philosophy.
So just enjoying reading up on the latest discovery's and perhaps in-time may share some of my own.

Physics news on Phys.org
We don't discuss philosophy here and personal theories and speculation are against the rules.

The purpose of this forum is to discuss established, mainstream science.

Everything, anyone has ever said on science is ultimately speculation based on incomplete human observations. Nothing is known 100% for sure. Even Einstein was convinced that his own theory must ultimately be wrong. This is the foundation of science and physics. Everything ever discussed has been personal theories and philosophy ;). Who said that the things I'm working on are not mainstream science? It seems you should read more carefully, and think more slowly before you judge and take it upon yourself to tell others what not to do. I read the rules. What is discussion if not exchanging personal opinions, different interpretations of known phenomena? [Insults deleted by the Mentors]

Some of that initial speculation has been corroborated and/or confirmed by experiment - and, thereby distilled into a body of knowledge, known as "established" science. We can effectively define such a body of knowldege by reference to peer-reviewed papers, textbooks and course material. That is what we deal with here.

Hence the rules, which you have to accept if you wish to contribute here.

Knowledge is a fancy word for speculation that has not been questioned for a while ;). As a quantum theorist, you should be painfully aware that no one in history has ever: described an initial state perfectly, no-one has ever described a process or experiment perfectly, and no-one has described a result fully or perfectly.

I see you giving your opinion just fine: "In my opinion, our earthly powers of logic and reason are insufficient to answer such questions. Nevertheless, I can imagine the two greatest philosophical minds in history taking opposite positions on this question. Each being equally certain that they are right and the other is wrong!" In which textbook or paper was that? :)

That was a somewhat philosophical thread. And that's my opinion of why we don't allow philosophy on this site. There used to be a philosophy forum on here (before my time). But, apparently, it often degenerated into unresolvable arguments, so was discontinued. That might be a more prosaic way or saying what I said.

Physicists argue, of course, But, in general, the experimental evidence decides the issue - eventually. Even if sometimes older physicists who should know better can't accept that they were wrong.

I was just about to suggest a "Spurious"-forum where philosophical speculations could run rampart, but then again the site is pretty well covered as per the rules. :woot:

Welcome to the OP though.

EDIT: Although some philosophy is allowed if it's based on peer-reviewed journals.

:) I was just pointing out, that you're coming out very strong against a perfectly scientific but slightly philosophical reaction that I posted to the same somewhat philosophical question you answered. But you're happy to treat you own opinion as peer-reviewed while mine was deleted right away. So just pointing out the rigorous moderation seems more like personal preference so far ;)

My original post only pointed out the rules. I have no power to delete anything.

My opinion, by definition, is not peer reviewed. In the case you mentioned, it wasn't material to any physical theory. Just that I personally trust science over philosophy, which is a tenet of this forum.

I'm not a moderator or anything but I can assure you that the moderation is not personal. I've had several of my posts deleted learning the rules properly. Don't let that discourage you. You can work within them, I'm sure.

@FlorianR -- this is the bottom line. If you wish to participate at PF, you will need to abide by the PF rules that you agreed to when you joined here. I provided a link to those rules in my DM to you just now.

This intro thread will remain closed.
