I plan a hard SF story and a scene where a fleet intends to capture an asteroid mine. AI ruled out, that society completely get rid of anything more advanced than a calculator (and became a tyranny). They still have advanced technology developed before the AI rebellion. Destroy space colonies also ruled out, there is an agreement between Mars and Moon and most asteroid barons.
So how should they capture an asteeoid mine? I think about the following steps.
– Long range bombing. The problem is that quite many underground place could hide weapons.
– Mothership launch fighters and shuttles, sorrounded by decoys. The real ships dont ignite thrusters unless they have to dodge projectiles or close to surface.
– All ships have strong heat shields against lasers. Fighters have detachable ones if they have to manuever.
– Destroyers stay in a relative safe range, but they can give some laser support.
– Once shuttles reach surface, manned walkers emerge. They arent like big mecha but have legs in all direction for manuever in microgravity tunnels. The legs have plasma drillers for anchoring and possible close range combat.
Is there anything that is very implausible, anything you would like to add?
