Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a recent announcement regarding sounds produced by the Sun, as captured by NASA and ESA scientists. Participants explore the nature of these sounds, their interpretations, and personal anecdotes related to sound recordings.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants describe the sounds of the Sun as reminiscent of a Tibetan meditation bowl or a cosmic didgeridoo, suggesting a poetic interpretation of the data.
  • Others express skepticism, with one participant humorously comparing the sounds to a vacuum cleaner, questioning the nature of the recorded vibrations.
  • A participant mentions a personal experience of creating a similar sound recording, noting its unintended effect on children during a Halloween event.
  • Another participant humorously asserts that the Sun does not have a desire to vacuum, indicating a lighthearted tone in response to the previous comment.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion features a mix of interpretations and reactions to the sounds of the Sun, with no clear consensus on their nature or implications. Participants express both appreciation and skepticism, indicating a variety of perspectives.

Contextual Notes

Some statements rely on subjective interpretations of the sounds, and there may be varying definitions of what constitutes "sound" in the context of solar vibrations.

Close your eyes and listen to this clip. It may sound like a Tibetan meditation bowl or a giant cosmic didgeridoo, but it's actually the sun! Kind of.

A group of very poetic scientists from NASA and the ESA (The European Space Agency) used data from NASA's Solar and Heliospehric Observatory to map the vibrations that form the "low, pulsing hum of our star's heartbeat." The result will either chill you out or instill a deep and vague sense of heliacal unease.

Sounds like something right out of Black Mirror. Or the sun is in pain.

Sounds like someone was running a vacuum cleaner in the next room. :oldtongue:

@Borg , the Sun does not have a burning desire to vacuum for anyone.

Cool!

Many years ago I made a somewhat similar recording using a variable frequency audio oscillator recorded on a continuious loop of mag tape. There were also some randomly inserted some step frequency changes. A neighbor used it as background effects for a rather extensive Halloween installation. Several parents complained about it because it scared their little ones!
