SUMMARY

The best starting point for learning about Astrophysics is Special Relativity (SR), which requires minimal prerequisites in mathematics and physics. For foundational mathematics, the GCSE and A-Level mathematics syllabus is essential, and resources such as Khan Academy provide valuable introductory content. Additionally, understanding calculus and Newtonian mechanics is crucial for grasping cosmological concepts. The Friedmann equations are recommended for a straightforward introduction to cosmology.

PREREQUISITES
  • Special Relativity (SR)
  • GCSE and A-Level mathematics
  • Calculus
  • Newtonian mechanics
NEXT STEPS
  • Study Special Relativity through online courses or textbooks
  • Explore GCSE and A-Level mathematics resources on Exam Solutions
  • Learn calculus fundamentals via Khan Academy
  • Read about the Friedmann equations and their implications in cosmology
USEFUL FOR

Individuals interested in Astrophysics, particularly adult learners seeking to build a solid mathematical foundation for understanding the universe, as well as educators and students in physics and mathematics.

Summary:: Which area to best start learning about in Astrophysics.

I'm 44 years old and when I was at school we only learned basic things in Maths. Now I'm older, I'm fascinated by the Universe and Astrophysics etc. What would be the best things/areas, maths wise, to learn about first?

The GCSE and A-Level mathematics syllabus is covered here:

That's the basic mathematical starting point. After that you are looking at university undergraduate level texts and courses.

More generally, there is the Khan Academy:

"Universe and Astrophysics" are very broad topics, covering almost all the physics and math domains/areas you can imagine. In my opinion, you cannot be wrong to begin with calculus and Newtonian mechanics.
