Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of designing a bulletproof mask using geometric principles and materials like titanium and kinetic gel pads. Participants explore the theoretical and practical aspects of such a design, including its potential applications in personal defense.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that geometry could be key to designing a mask that deflects bullets but lacks the mathematical expertise to develop the concept further.
  • Another participant questions the practicality of a mask deflecting bullets, noting that even tactical masks do not claim to provide such protection.
  • A different participant proposes using titanium and kinetic gel pads as materials for the mask, asserting that this combination could allow survival from a bullet impact.
  • There is a mention of the project being in the realm of pure research and development, with intentions to market the mask as a personal defense item.
  • One participant emphasizes the need for a deeper understanding of physics, ballistics, and materials science before pursuing the project further.
  • A later reply raises skepticism about the originality of the idea, referencing existing ballistic face masks as evidence that similar concepts have been previously explored.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the feasibility and originality of the bulletproof mask concept. There is no consensus on whether the proposed design could effectively deflect bullets or if it has already been adequately addressed in existing research.

Contextual Notes

Limitations in the discussion include a lack of detailed mathematical analysis, uncertainty regarding the effectiveness of proposed materials, and the need for further exploration of existing solutions in the field of ballistic protection.

I'm trying to get a mask made that will deflect a incoming bullet, and in my mind geometry is the answer. I don't have the know how to do the math but if someone out there could help me out, that would be great.

Welcome to the PF.

And what will this mask be used for? Even tactical SWAT masks/visors don't claim to deflect rounds. You would need the carried shield for that...

the mask would be made out Ti and with kinetic gel pads in the inside you should survive a round hitting the mask.

What is the context of the project?

pure research and development, but I intend to sell it as a personal defense item.

You won't have anything to sell until you, personally, have added to your knowledge about:
1. Physics
2. Ballistics
3. Materials Science
4. The Limitations of Graphic Novel Authors (a new academic discipline I just invented.)

What makes you think things like this haven't already been tried? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ballistic_face_mask
