SUMMARY

Employers in the engineering field prioritize candidates with an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in engineering. The discussion highlights the concern of transitioning from a BS in Business to pursuing a Master of Science (MS) in Engineering without the foundational undergraduate engineering curriculum. Participants emphasize that while an MS can enhance qualifications, the lack of an ABET-accredited BS may significantly limit job opportunities in mechanical engineering. Ultimately, obtaining a BS in Engineering with ABET accreditation is recommended for better career prospects.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of ABET accreditation standards
  • Familiarity with mechanical engineering principles
  • Knowledge of the job market for engineers
  • Awareness of educational pathways in engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Research ABET accreditation requirements for engineering programs
  • Explore mechanical engineering undergraduate programs
  • Investigate the job market trends for engineers with MS degrees
  • Learn about the benefits of obtaining a BS in Engineering versus an MS
USEFUL FOR

Individuals considering a career transition into engineering, hiring managers in engineering fields, and students evaluating educational paths in mechanical engineering.

I have a BS in Business but would be happier with a career in mechanical engineering. I have sat in on a number of courses at the local UC to make sure I know what I would be getting myself into. My math skills are not a concern for me.

The question I have is whether I would be able to find work as an engineer if I decided to go for an MS instead of a BS. I know the amount of education would be different by not having the full undergraduate engineering curriculum, and that is the part that concerns me as I hear the employers really want that ABET degree and very few masters programs are ABET.

In the real world, how much would not having the ABET BS restrict my ability to find work as an engineer with me having an BS Business and MS in Engineering?

Can anyone who hires engineers or is familiar with this situation chime in on this.
