SUMMARY

Applicants with a Bachelor of Science in Physics can successfully gain admission to geosciences graduate programs, even without a geology background. The acceptance largely depends on the specific institution's policies and openness to diverse academic backgrounds. Notably, a former physics graduate transitioned into a geology PhD and secured employment with BP, demonstrating the feasibility of this path. Institutions such as Caltech, Stanford, and Arizona State are potential options for applicants seeking to specialize in sedimentology.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of sedimentology principles
  • Familiarity with graduate application processes
  • Knowledge of research experience in related fields
  • Awareness of geosciences program requirements at specific institutions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research sedimentology coursework and prerequisites at Caltech, Stanford, and Arizona State
  • Explore potential research opportunities in geosciences related to physics
  • Investigate networking opportunities with professionals in the geosciences field
  • Review successful graduate application strategies for non-traditional backgrounds
USEFUL FOR

Prospective graduate students in geosciences, particularly those with a physics background, and individuals seeking to understand the admission landscape of geological sciences programs.

I have a BS degree in physics from a US school with no geology background whatsoever. But I want to pursue graduate degree in geological sciences (sedimentology). I have two REU experiences under my belt but none of them were related to geophysics. Can I apply and get admitted to geosciences graduate program ?

It depends entirely on the institution you have your eye on and whether or not they're willing to accept you into the program. FWIW one of my friends got his BS in physics and his PhD in some sort of geology and didn't seem to have too many problems finding a program that would take him. He ended up working for BP. He was pretty busy a few months ago.

Im applying to Caltech, Stanford and Arizona State. Any suggestion ?
