Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the question of whether it is possible to publish a scientific paper without including references or citations. Participants explore the implications of referencing in scientific writing, particularly in the context of originality and innovation.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses concern about the lack of citations in their paper, questioning the feasibility of publication without references.
  • Another participant argues that even innovative work should acknowledge previous attempts and failures, implying that references are essential.
  • A different participant suggests that familiarity with existing literature is necessary for publication, prompting a question about what references are typically used in the field.
  • One participant cites Einstein's 1905 relativity paper as an example of a work without references, but advises caution in trying to replicate that approach.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the necessity of references for publication, with some emphasizing their importance while others cite exceptions.

Contextual Notes

There are assumptions about the expectations of different fields regarding citations, and the discussion does not resolve the question of how to handle references in innovative work.

This is complete nonsense. Even the most innovative approach to any problem can reference the failed attempts of others.

Well, since you are wishing to publish a paper I assume that you are well-read on the literature in the appropriate field of study. What sort of references do they use?

Einstein got away without including any references in his famous 1905 relativity paper, but I'd be cautious of trying to emulate his example. :olduhh:
