Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around issues encountered when using a TI calculator to perform row reduction on a matrix. The original poster describes receiving an error when attempting to use the rref or ref functions on a matrix with more entries than vectors.

Discussion Character

 • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

 • Participants inquire about the specific error message and request an example matrix to better understand the issue. There is also a question regarding the meaning of "more entries than vectors."

Discussion Status

The discussion is ongoing, with participants seeking clarification on the original poster's situation and the specifics of the calculator being used. Some guidance has been offered regarding the requirements for matrix dimensions according to the TI-84 manual.

Contextual Notes

There is a mention of a potential constraint from the calculator's manual stating that matrices must have more columns than rows, which may be relevant to the error encountered.

Homework Statement

Let's say I have more entries than vectors and I put them in a matrix. Now for some reason when I put rref(A) or ref(A), it gives me an error. WHYY?

Can you give us an example? And what error does it output, exactly?

This is probably obvious, but according to the TI-84 Guidebook, when using ref( or rref(, "the number of columns must be greater than or equal to the number of rows."

What do you mean by "more entries than vectors"?

Let's say I have

[tex]\begin{bmatrix}
3 &1 \\
5&7 \\
1 &3
\end{bmatrix}[/tex]

My Ti- gives me an error

Anyone...?

You didn't say what kind of TI calculator you have. According to eumyang, the TI 84 manual says that matrices must have more columns than rows. Have you looked at the user manual for your calculator?
