Chemical Reactions Homework: Copper & Silver Nitrate Reaction

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the chemical reaction between copper and silver nitrate, represented by the equation 2AgNO3(aq) + Cu(s) -----> Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s). Participants seek to identify the net ionic equation for this reaction and provide evidence of the chemical change. The net ionic equation is Ag^+(aq) + Cu(s) → Cu^2+(aq) + Ag(s). Evidence of the reaction includes the formation of solid silver, indicating a displacement reaction has occurred.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of net ionic equations
  • Knowledge of displacement reactions
  • Familiarity with chemical notation and states of matter
  • Basic principles of chemical reactions
NEXT STEPS
  • Study net ionic equations in detail
  • Research displacement reactions and their characteristics
  • Explore the properties of copper and silver in chemical reactions
  • Learn about evidence of chemical reactions in laboratory settings

Homework Statement

When copper metal is placed in a beaker containing a solution of silver nitrate, a reaction occurs which can be represented by the following equation:

2AgNO3(aq) + Cu(s) -----> Cu(NO3)2(aq) + 2Ag(s)

a) Give the net ionic equation to represent this reaction occurring
b) Give one piece of evidence which would indicate that a chemical reaction has occurred.

2. The attempt at a solution
a) i have no idea how to write the ionic equation for this
b) is it that a displacement has happened?
